Wave propagation in a gravitational field

In this thesis we study aspects of strong-field gravitational lensing by black holes in general relativity, with a particular focus on the role of integrability and chaos in geodesic motion. We first investigate binary black hole shadows using the Majumdar–Papapetrou static binary black hole (or di-hole) solution. It is shown that the propagation of null geodesics on this spacetime background is a natural example of chaotic scattering. We demonstrate that the binary black hole shadows exhibit a self-similar fractal structure akin to the Cantor set. Next, we use techniques from the field of non-linear dynamics to quantify these fractal structures in binary black hole shadows. Using a recently developed numerical algorithm, called the merging method, we demonstrate that parts of the Majumdar–Papapetrou di-hole shadow may possess the Wada property. We then study the existence, stability and phenomenology of circular photon orbits in stationary axisymmetric four-dimensional spacetimes. We employ a Hamiltonian formalism to describe the null geodesics of the Weyl–Lewis–Papapetrou geometry. Using the Einstein–Maxwell equations, we demonstrate that generic stable photon orbits are forbidden in pure vacuum, but may arise in electrovacuum. Finally, we apply a higher-order geometric optics formalism to describe the propagation of electromagnetic waves on Kerr spacetime. Using the symmetries of Kerr spacetime, we construct a complex null tetrad which is parallel-propagated along null geodesics; we introduce a system of transport equations to calculate certain Newman–Penrose quantities along rays; we derive generalised power series solutions to these transport equations through sub-leading order in the neighbourhood of caustic points; and we introduce a practical method to evolve the transport equations beyond caustic points.

Strong-field gravitational lensing by black holes

The detection of gravitational waves (GWs) propagating through cosmic structures can provide invaluable information on the geometry and content of our Universe, as well as on the fundamental theory of gravity. In order to test possible departures from General Relativity, it is essential to analyse, in a modified gravity setting, how GWs propagate through a perturbed cosmological space-time. Working within the framework of geometrical optics, we develop tools to address this topic for a broad class of scalar-tensor theories, including scenarios with non-minimal, derivative couplings between scalar and tensor modes. We determine the corresponding evolution equations for the GW amplitude and polarization tensor. The former satisfies a generalised evolution equation that includes possible effects due to a variation of the effective Planck scale; the latter can fail to be parallely transported along GW geodesics unless certain conditions are satisfied. We apply our general formulas to specific scalar-tensor theories with unit tensor speed, and then focus on GW propagation on a perturbed space-time. We determine corrections to standard formulas for the GW luminosity distance and for the evolution of the polarization tensor, which depend both on modified gravity and on the effects of cosmological perturbations. Our results can constitute a starting point to disentangle among degeneracies from different sectors that can influence GW propagation through cosmological space-times.

Gravitational waves and geometrical optics in scalar-tensor theories

The laws of geometric optics and their corrections are derived for scalar, electromagnetic, and gravitational waves propagating in generic curved spacetimes. Local peeling-type results are obtained, where different components of high-frequency fields are shown to scale with different powers of their frequencies. Additionally, finite-frequency corrections are identified for a number of conservation laws and observables. Among these observables are a field’s energy and momentum densities, as well as several candidates for its corrected “propagation directions”.

Gravitational lensing beyond geometric optics: I. Formalism and observables

It is standard practice to study the lensing of gravitational waves (GW) using the geometric optics regime. However, in many astrophysical configurations this regime breaks down as the wavelength becomes comparable to the Schwarzschild radius of the lens. We revisit the lensing of GW including corrections beyond geometric optics. We propose a perturbative method for calculating these corrections simply solving first order decoupled differential equations. We study the behavior of a single ray and find that the polarization plane defined in geometric optics is smeared due to diffraction effects, which leads to the rise of apparent vector and scalar polarization modes. We analyze how these modes depend on the observer choice, and we study the impact of diffraction on the pseudostress energy momentum tensor of the gravitational field.

Gravitational wave propagation beyond geometric optics

The higher order corrections to geometrical optics are studied in general relativity for an electromagnetic test wave. An explicit expression is found for the average energy–momentum tensor which takes into account the first‐order corrections. Finally the first‐order corrections to the well‐known area‐intensity law of geometrical optics are derived.
