Using phenology prediction in weed management: a review

1 The regulation of germination of Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. under plant canopies, and its relation with temperature fluctuation requirements of these seeds, were studied. 2 Seed germination was depressed under closed leaf canopies and both seedling emergence and soil thermal amplitude were strongly related to canopy height. 3 A similar effect was observed when seed banks were subjected to increasing artificial shading. Heating the soil under dense canopies resulted in the same germination flux as observed in bare soil. 4 Germination responses to different alternating temperature regimes under controlled conditions were in agreement with the results of field experiments where soil temperature was modified either by shading or heating. 5 These results demonstrate that the alternating temperature requirements for germination of S. halepense seeds have a role in regulating seed germination under leaf canopies. In Argentinean crop fields, weed control is mainly achieved by intense use of glyphosate as a nonselective and/or selective herbicide. Glyphosate use is very high as more than 95% of the 16 million ha soybean crop consists of glyphosate-resistant cultivars, always treated with this herbicide. From initial success, inconsistent glyphosate control of Johnsongrass, an invading C4 perennial grass of soybean crops, has become evident to producers from northern Argentina over the last 3 yr. Prior to this, glyphosate provided good control. This study evaluated the nature of these recurrent glyphosate failures in Johnsongrass. Experiments conducted with Johnsongrass plants obtained from seed and rhizome phytomers collected from fields with intense glyphosate use history showed that these populations showed differential survival and biomass productivity when glyphosate treated than Johnsongrass plants obtained from similar propagules collected from field sites with no history of glyphosate use. Evolution of Glyphosate-Resistant Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense) in Glyphosate-Resistant Soybean

Summary: 

A mathematical model to predict Sorghum hale-pense seedling recruitment dynamics in relation to soil temperature was derived from the experimen-tal results obtained in a previous investigation. The model is based on the assumption that soil temperature controls seedling recruitment of S. halepense by controlling release from dormancy and germination rate once dormancy breakage has been produced. The previous analysis sup-plied mathematical functions to describe both the release from dormancy as controlled by tempera-ture fluctuations, and the response to ‘thermal time’ after dormancy breakage. These relation-ships were used in the construction of the model. This was tested against experimental field data with two differently aged seedbanks, in two seasons: spring and autumn. In each case in situ germination was monitored in plots with bare soil or soil surface shaded to simulate cover by a canopy. Soil temperature was recorded hourly and was used as an input of the model.



A good description of seedling emergence dynamics in the field was obtained with the model, showing that seedling recruitment can be predicted using soil temperature data. The practi-cal value of the developed model is discussed.

Un modele mathematique pour prevoir la dyna-mique de levee des plantules de Sorghum hale-pense en relation avec la temperature du sol a eteetabli a partir de resultats experimentaux obtenus dans une recherche anterieure. Le modele est base sur l'hypothese que la temperature du sol controle la levee des plantules de S. halepense en contro-lant la sortie de dormance et le taux de germina-tion des que la levee de dormance s'est produite. L'analyse anterieure a fourni des fonctions math-ematiques pour decrire a la fois la sortie de dormance sous controle des fluctuations de tem-perature et l'effet du temps thermique apres la levee de dormance. Ces correlations ont ete utilisees dans la construction du modele. Celui-ci a ete teste avec des donnees collectees au champ avec des stocks grainiers de deux âges differents, en deux saisons: le printemps et l'automne. Dans chaque cas la germination in situ etait suivie dans des parcelles en sol nu ou en sol avec une couverture artificielle. La temperature etait rele-vee toutes les heures et etait introduite dans le modele.



Une bonne description de la dynamique de la levee des plantules au champ est obtenue avec le modele, montrant que la levee des plantules peut etre prevue a partir des temperatures du sol. La valeur pratique du modele developpe est discutee.

Zusammenfassung: 

Ein Modell uber die Auflaufdynamik von Sor-ghum halepense bei verschiedenen Bodentempera-turen wurde anhand der Ergebnisse aus einer vorhergehenden Untersuchung entwickelt. Es basiert auf der Voraussetzung, das die Boden-temperatur das Auflaufen der Samen von S. halepense durch Aufhebung der Dormanz und uber die Keimrate bestimmt. Bei der vorherge-henden Untersuchung ergaben sich mathema-tische Funktionen sowohl der Brechung der Dormanz durch wechselnde Temperaturen als auch der Reaktion auf die ‘Warmezeit’ danach. Diese Beziehungen wurden in das Modell aufge-nommen, das an den Ergebnissen aus einem Freilandversuch mit 2 verschieden alten Samen-banken in 2 Jahreszeiten, Fruhjahr und Herbst, uberpruft wurde, wozu die Keimrate im Feld bei offenem Boden und bei beschattetem (Simulation einer Pflanzendecke) erfast und die Bodentem-peratur stundlich gemessen wurde. Mit dem Modell lies sich die Auflaufdynamik im Feld gut beschreiben, denn das Auflaufen der Keimpflan-zen kann mit Hilfe der Temperaturdaten voraus-berechnet werden. Der praktische Wert des Modells wird diskutiert.

Summary

The dynamics of Sorghum helpense (L.) Pers. rhizome sprout emergence was followed in three different crop systems. A simple exponential model relating the number of rhizome sprouts m−2 to accumulated thermal units, calculated as the sum of the daily mean air temperatures above 15°C, provided a good estimate of cumulative shoot emergence populations (r2= 0·93) over all sampling dates between June and January. A good description of the dynamics of shoot emergence in an independent experiment was obtained from the model.



The possible influence of the crop structure and soil water supply in relation to the model fitness is discussed.

La dynamique de l'emission de pousses par les rhizomes de Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. a eteetudiee dans trois systemes de culture differents. Un simple modele exponentiel qui relie le nombre de pousses m−2 aux unites thermiques accumulees, c'est-a-dire le total des temperatures atmosphŕiques quotidiennes moyennes qui depassaient 15°C, a fourni une evaluation assez juste des peuplements globaux de pousses (r2= 0,93) sur toutes les dates d'echantillonnage entre les mois de juin et janvier. Dans une experimentation autonome, le modele a fourni une bonne description de la dynamique d'emergence des pousses.



La discussion porte sur les possibilites d'influence de la structure de la culture et de l'hydrographie du sol par rapport au modele.

Prognose der Austriebsdynamik von Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. in Beziehung zur Lufttemperatur



In drei Kulturen wurde die Dynamik des Austreibens der Rhizome von Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. untersucht. Ein einfaches Exponentialmodel, basierend auf der Beziehung zwischen der Anzahl Austriebe pro m2 und den kumulierten Temperatureinheiten (berechnet als Summe der taglichen Temperaturmittelwerte uber 15°C) ergab eine gute Schatzung der kumulierten Austriebsdichten bei allen Auswertungsdaten zwischen Juni und Januar. In einem unabhangigen Versuch wurde eine gute Uebereinstimmung der Dynamik der Triebentwiuklung mit dem Modell festgestellt.



Ein moglicher Einfluss von Bodenstruktur und verfugbarem Bodenwasser in Bezug auf die Zuverlassigkeit des Modells wird diskutiert.

Prediction of Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. rhizome sprout emergence in relation to air temperature

Summary: 

The dynamics of sprout emergence and rhizome populations of Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. were followed in two field experiments. In addition, the herbicide dalapon was applied at various stages during rhizome development and the degree of control was evaluated. Rhizome biomass oscillated during the growth cycle, whereas the number of rhizome sprouts increased asymptotically until mid-summer. Observed values were compared against those predicted from a thermal calendar model. The dynamics of the rhizome population was predicted accurately in both experiments, but only in one of them was the prediction of the sprout emergence satisfactory. The degree of control differed markedly between herbicide applications at various intervals during population development. Best results were obtained from applications when rhizome biomass was at a minimum. The time of minimum biomass was predicted by a thermal calendar model. The advantages of using the thermal calendar model to determine the time of herbicide application, and the possible influence of the distribution of the rhizome population in the soil profile on the predictions of the model, are discussed.

La dynamique des populations de rhizome et de la levee des pousses de Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. a fait I'objet d'un suivi dans deux par-celles experimentales. En outre, l'herbicide dalapon a ete applique a differents stades du developpement du rhizome et le degre de destruction a eteevalue. La biomasse du rhizome oscille pendant le cycle de croissance, tandis que le nombre de pousses croit de facon asymptotique jusqu'au milieu de I'ete. Les valeurs observees ont ete mises en comparaison avec celles obtenues a partir d'un modeie de calendrier thermique. La dynamique de population rhizomatique a ete prevue avec precision dans les deux essais, mais la prevision de la levee de pousse n'a ete satisfaisante que dans un seul cas. Le degre d'action herbicide a differe de facon sensible entre les differentes applications aux divers moments du developpement de la population. Les meilleurs resultats sont obtenus avec des applications au moment ou la biomasse rhizomatique est a son minimum. Ce moment a ete prevu a l'aide d'un modeie de calendrier thermique. Les avantages de I'utilisation d'un modeie de calendrier thermique pour determiner l'epoque d'application et l'influence possible de la distribution de la population rhizomatique dans le profil du sol sur les previ-sions du modeie sont discutes.

Die Spros- und Rhizombildung von Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. wurde in zwei Freilandversuchen beobachtet, bei denen auch in verschiedenen Stadien der Rhizomentwicklung das Herbizid Dalapon ausgebracht und dessen Wirkung untersucht wurde. Die Frischmasse der Rhizome schwankte wahrend der Vegeta-tionsperiode, wahrend die Zahl der Rhizom-triebe bis zur Mitte des Sommers asymptotisch zunahm. Die beobachteten Werte wurden mit denen eines Temperatur-Zeit-Modells ver-glichen. Die Dynamik der Rhizombildung wurde in beiden Versuchen genau vor-hergesagt, die Prognose der oberirdischen Sprosse war jedoch nur in einem der Versuche befriedigend. Der Bekampfungsgrad nach den Behandlungen in verschiedenen Stadien der Populationsentwicklung war sehr unter-schiedlich. Die besten Ergebnisse wurden erreicht, wenn die Frischmasse der Rhizome bei der Behandlung im Minimum war, dessen Zeit-punkt durch das Modell bestimmt wurde. Die Vorteile des Temperatur-Zeit-Modells fur die Zeitwahl der Herbizidanwendung und die Zusammenhange zwischen der Entwicklung der Rhizome und der Prognosen wurden diskutiert.
