Reports about the frequency of odontogenic tumors are scarce, and diagnostic criteria used in the reports are not uniform. This article presents the results of a retrospective study of odontogenic tumors recorded in four services of diagnostic pathology in Mexico City (two dental schools, one cancer hospital, and one private oral pathology service). The final diagnosis in each case was based on the 1992 histologic criteria of the World Health Organization. The frequency of odontogenic tumors, expressed as a percent of all oral and maxillofacial specimens, ranged from 0.8% in the cancer hospital (0.02% of all biopsies) to 3.7% in the private oral pathology service. The frequency was identical for the two dental schools (2.5%). We found a total of 349 odontogenic tumors; of these, 345 were benign (98.8%), and 4 (1.1%) were malignant (3 were primary intraosseous carcinomas and 1 was a malignant ameloblastoma). The most frequently occurring tumors were odontoma (34.6%), ameloblastoma (23.7%), myxoma (17.7%), adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (7.1%), and calcifying odontogenic cyst (6.8%). Although relatively rare, odontogenic tumors are still an important cause of extensive surgical procedures in Mexico.

Odontogenic tumors in Mexico: A collaborative retrospective study of 349 cases

Topographically, the AOT occurs in peripheral and central variants, the latter further in follicular (with embedded tooth) and extrafollicular (no embedded tooth) types. The AOT is slow growing with few or no symptoms. Tumor growth may cause displacement of teeth rather than root resorption. The follicular AOT mimics a follicular cyst, the extrafollicular a residual or "globulo-maxillary" cyst and the peripheral a gingival fibroma. All variants of AOT show identical histologic features. The central variants account for 97.2%, 73.0% of which are follicular. The follicular variant (M:F ratio 1 to 1.9) is three times as frequent as the extrafollicular. The follicular variant is diagnosed earlier in life (mean age 17 yr) than the extrafollicular (mean age 24 yr). 53.1% of all variants occur within the teens (13-19 yr). Follicular AOT is associated with one embedded tooth in 93.2%. Maxillary permanent canines account for 41.7% and all four canines for 60.1% of AOT-associated embedded teeth. Ranking four among the odontogenic tumors the AOT is not a particularly rare tumor. Conservative surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Documented recurrences have not been reported.

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor: biologic profile based on 499 cases

BACKGROUND: Adenomatoid odontogenic tumour (AOT) is a benign odontogenic jaw lesion. The aim of this study was to update the biological profile of AOT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cases published in the literature and cases in files of co-authors were included. RESULTS: 550 new cases were retrieved, and of a total of 1082 cases analysed, 87.2% were found in the second and third decades. The M:F ratio was 1:1.9. 70.8% were of the follicular variant (extrafollicular: 26.9%, peripheral: 2.3%). 64.3% occurred in the maxilla. 60% of follicular AOTs were associated with unerupted canines. Nineteen cases of AOT (2.8%, M:F ratio was 1:1.4) were associated with embedded third molars. Twenty-two peripheral AOTs (2.3%, M:F ratio was 1:5.3) were recorded. The relative frequency (RF) of AOT ranged between 0.6% and 38.5%, revealing a considerably wider AOT/RF range than hitherto reported (2.2–7.1%). CONCLUSIONS: This updated review based on the largest number of AOT cases ever presented, confirms the distinctive, although not pathognomonic clinicopathological profile of the AOT, its worldwide occurrence, and its consistently benign behaviour.

An updated clinical and epidemiological profile of the adenomatoid odontogenic tumour: a collaborative retrospective study

Objective — To establish the incidence of odontogenic tumours in Nigeria we present our experience during the 15-year period 1980–1994. Design — Retrospective review of histopathological specimens and case notes. Setting — Teaching hospital, Nigeria. Subjects — 128 Patients with histologically confirmed odontogenic tumours out of a total of 415 with tumours of the mouth and jaw. Main outcome measures — Incidence, treatment, and recurrence rate. Results — Ameloblastoma (n = 21, 16%) and adenomatoid tumour (n = 16.13%). Patients' ages ranged from 8 to 75 years (mean 33 for ameloblastoma, 31 for fibromyxoma, and 22 for adenomatoid tumour). The corresponding male:female ratios were 3:2, 2:3, and 1:1, and maxilla:mandible ratios 1:9, 1.1:1, and 2:1. The more radical the resection of ameloblastomas the less likely were they to recur. Conclusion — Further research is required to explain the high incidence of odontogenic tumours in Nigeria, particularly ameloblastomas.

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor in a black African population: Report of thirteen cases

Parkinson's disease is one of the progressive neurodegenerative diseases from which people suffer for years. The mechanism of this disease is associated with a decrease in the number of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN) while Lewy bodies are still present. As a result, both motor—ridity, tremor, and bradykinesia—and non‐motor symptoms such as anxiety and depression. Nowadays, it is well known that the cause behind Parkinson's disease is mainly environmental changes, genetic susceptibility, and toxins. Unfortunately, there is no cure for the disease but treatments. The replacement of lost neurons, α‐synuclein and apomorphine, is currently being studied for new therapies. This article focuses on history, mechanism, factors causing Parkinson's disease as well as future therapies for the cure of the diseases.

The understanding of Parkinson's disease through genetics and new therapies

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia worldwide. Because Alzheimer's disease has no known treatment, sufferers and their caregivers must concentrate on symptom management. Astrocytes and microglia are now known to play distinct physiological roles in synaptic function, the blood-brain barrier, and neurovascular coupling. Consequently, the search for drugs that can slow the degenerative process in dementia sufferers continues because existing drugs are designed to alleviate the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. Drugs that address pathological changes without interfering with the normal function of glia, such as eliminating amyloid-beta deposits, are prospective treatments for neuroinflammatory illnesses. Because neuron-astrocytes-microglia interactions are so complex, developing effective, preventive, and therapeutic medications for AD will necessitate novel methodologies and strategic targets. This review focused on existing medications used in treating AD amongst which include Donepezil, Choline Alphoscerate, Galantamine, Dextromethorphan, palmitoylethanolamide, citalopram, resveratrol, and solanezumab. This review summarizes the effects of these drugs on neurons, astrocytes, and microglia interactions based on their pharmacokinetic properties, mechanism of action, dosing, and clinical presentations.

Review of Alzheimer’s disease drugs and their relationship with neuron-glia interaction

The effect of COVID-19 is enormous, and high-risk COVID-19 case arises when underlying infections like diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathy are present, and an immunocompromised state such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). People living with HIV(PLHIV) may be exposed to severe COVID-19, mostly in areas with poor access to proper care and complex intervention for HIV infection. During the lockdown, those with medical appointments will not access health facilities, which may be detrimental to people living with HIV. Emerging evidence suggests COVID-19 pandemic fear may lead to adverse mental health outcomes and affect preventive behavior. In addition to the stigma and discrimination associated with HIV, COVID-19 is also causing concerns. People with HIV tend to have mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress (PTSD), which can be both a cause and a harmful impact of HIV. Discussed in this research is the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on HIV patients, their similarities, differences, and urgent attention from healthcare centers to take charge and respond to patients with HIV and other immunosuppressed conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
