PurposeMost projects are facing delays, and accelerating the pace of project progress is a necessity. Project managers are responsible for completing the project on time with minimum cost and with maximum quality. This study provides a trade-off between time, cost, and quality objectives to optimize project scheduling.Design/methodology/approachThe current paper presents a new resource-constrained multi-mode time–cost–quality trade-off project scheduling model with lags under finish-to-start relations. To be more realistic, crashing and overlapping techniques are utilized. To handle uncertainty, which is a source of project complexity, interval-valued fuzzy sets are adopted on several parameters. In addition, a new hybrid solution approach is developed to cope with interval-valued fuzzy mathematical model that is based on different alpha-levels and compensatory methods. To find the compatible solution among conflicting objectives, an arithmetical average method is provided as a compensatory approach.FindingsThe interval-valued fuzzy sets approach proposed in this paper is denoted to be scalable, efficient, generalizable and practical in project environments. The results demonstrated that the crashing and overlapping techniques improve time–cost–quality trade-off project scheduling model. Also, interval-valued fuzzy sets can properly manage expressions of the uncertainty of projects which are realistic and practical. The proposed mathematical model is validated by solving a medium-sized dataset an adopted case study. In addition, with a sensitivity analysis approach, the solutions are compared and the model performance is confirmed.Originality/valueThis paper introduces a new continuous-based, resource-constrained, and multi-mode model with crashing and overlapping techniques simultaneously. In addition, a new hybrid compensatory solution approach is extended based on different alpha-levels to handle interval-valued fuzzy multi-objective mathematical model of project scheduling with influential uncertain parameters.

ABSTRACT Due to today’s competitive environment and information boom, companies are concerned about production planning in uncertain conditions. This paper integrates decision-making method with production scheduling model by considering limited resources. In this paper, a new mathematical model is extended for production project scheduling with multiple execution modes. The main aim of the formulation is to plan and schedule real production projects in uncertain environments. A new mixed-integer linear formulation is presented by considering trade-off of cost, time, as well as quality. Cost–time-quality trade-off is extended with the interval information. In the presented model, activity quality could be enhanced by reworking. The interval forms of some parameters, including duration, quality of activities, cost, and total available resources, are obtained by determining weights of experts and aggregating them. The presented group decision-making method is based on a bi-directional projection measure to deal with interval information. Since the mathematical model is multi-objective and some data are interval, a new modified solution method is developed for solving the model. The presented method for both decision-making and mathematical models is investigated by a real-world production project and two datasets to ascertain the accuracy of the model. Finally, an appropriate sensitivity analysis is proposed.

A new approach for production project scheduling with time-cost-quality trade-off considering multi-mode resource-constraints under interval uncertainty

Project management is a process that schemes and controls the project life cycle via the easiest and the best way to achieve project goals. Project managers always aim to simultaneously handle conflicting goals in the organization. In this paper, a new mathematical model is proposed that simultaneously minimizes total cost and completion time and maximizes the quality in the project management decision problem. Contractual penalty cost and contractual reward cost with a new method are the other consideration in the proposed model. In the projects, the relation between time and direct cost is a nonlinear function. Hence, a linearization technique is presented with attention to variable change and piecewise linearization, in which nonlinear function is converted to the linear programming model. On the other hand, in real conditions according to uncertainty in environmental situations and incomplete information, there can be ambiguity in parameters and variables of the problem. The uncertainty of the parameters and variables is expressed with fuzzy sets theory and fuzzy mathematical programming. The other aim of this paper is to introduce a modified version of fully fuzzy multi-objective linear programming for the problem. For analyzing a fully fuzzy time–cost–quality project management model, a practical example of the literature is provided. By examining the results of the model with conflicting objectives, two scenarios are presented to explore the interactions of conflicting objectives on the project, and the results are reported.
