This article presents the numerical modeling of an in-can melter containing a metallic and a glass phase. Low-frequency electromagnetic induction is used to melt and stir the metal, and the latter heats and drags the glass phase. A careful choice of operating parameters is required to prevent the solidification of the glass, and to increase the performances of the process. Numerical modeling helps in avoiding experimental trial and error method and in studying the effect of the operating parameters on the hydrodynamics. The main difficulty for the numerical modeling comes from the deformation of the interfaces, produced by the magnetic pressure. First, a theoretical estimation of this phenomenon is performed and compared with numerical and experimental results. Then, numerical results are presented for different power inputs, AC frequencies, and quantities of glass. One of the phenomena obtained numerically is air entrainment at the triple point, creating bubbles in the glass.

Numerical study of the hydrodynamics in a two-phase induction melter for nuclear waste treatment under various operating parameters

Gunluk hayatta metallerden alasim elde etmek veya kaynak yapabilmek icin metallerin eritilmesi, hizli bir sekilde isitilip sogutulmasi veya kismi isitmanin gerceklestirilmesi gerekmektedir. Bu tip ihtiyaclar icin kullanilan etkin yontemlerden biri de induksiyon isitma sistemidir. Elektromanyetik induksiyon yontemi ile isitma metal parcasi uzerindeki nuve kayiplarinin olusturdugu isi enerjinin kullanilmasidir. Bu nuve kayiplari, elektromanyetik alan icerisinde bulunan is parcasinda nuve icinde degisen manyetik alanlar tarafindan uretilen eddy akim kayiplari ve demir icinde domainlerin yonunu degistirmek icin olusan histerisis kayiplarindan meydana gelmektedir. Bu calismada, ayni olculerde farkli malzeme yapisinda metal is parcalarinin 5 sarimli bakir induksiyon bobini ile farkli calisma frekanslari icin bir manyetik model cikarilarak analiz edilmistir. Manyetik aki yogunlugu (B) dagilimlari ve is parcalarindaki deri etkisi incelenerek eddy kayiplari sunulmustur.

A fusion process based on low-frequency induction heating has been developed to treat mixed radioactive waste and produce biphasic glass/metal canisters compatible with a storage in a geological repository. The direct transfer of inductive power to the metal load ensures that fusion occurs directly in the final container and avoids a pouring stage. A thermal equilibrium develops during fusion between the power transmitted by induction and the power evacuated in the furnace's cooling circuits. The generator's electrical parameters are used to determine the amount of metal present in the canister.
