We have developed a new adaptive digital predistortion (DPD) linearization technique based on analog feedback predistortion (FBPD). The lookup-table-based feedback input can remove the bandwidth limitation of the feedback circuit related to the loop delay, and suppress feedback oscillation by accurate digital control of the feedback signal. Moreover, the predistortion (PD) signal can be extracted very efficiently. By combining the feedback linearization and DPD linearization techniques, the performance of the predistorter is enhanced significantly compared to the conventional DPD. To clearly visualize the characteristics of digital FBPD (DFBPD), we have compared it to the conventional DPD based on the recursive least square algorithm using Matlab simulation. The results clearly show that the new method is a good linearization algorithm, better than a conventional DPD. For the demonstration, a Doherty power amplifier with 180-W peak envelope power is linearized using the proposed DFBPD. For a 2.14-GHz forward-link wideband code-division multiple-access signal, the adjacent channel leakage ratio at 2.5-MHz offset is -58 dBc, which is improved by 15 dB at an average output power of 43 dBm

Adaptive Digital Feedback Predistortion Technique for Linearizing Power Amplifiers

Significant improvements in terms of reduced power consumption and increased bandwidth are obtained if a digital predistortion linearizer is implemented with an application specific digital signal processor. This paper investigates the quantization effects in different parts of a table based complex gain predistortion linearizer. The analysis can be used to optimize the predistortion linearizer with respect to word length based on the knowledge of the RF amplifier gain characteristic, the probability density function for the modulation scheme and the maximum allowable adjacent channel interference level. A predistorter chip is described that has been designed using the analysis. The chip has been fabricated and tested. Compared with a standard digital signal processing (DSP) solution it provides seven times higher bandwidth but consumes only 10% of the power.

Quantization analysis and design of a digital predistortion linearizer for RF power amplifiers

The authors present experimental results in which an adaptive complex gain predistorter achieved a reduction in out-of-band spectral emissions in excess of 20 dB for a class AB amplifier operating close to saturation. The experimental results demonstrate that a class AB power amplifier may be linearized without sacrificing efficiency. Although significant spectral reduction was achieved in the adjacent channel, the out-of-band spectral floor was flat and approximately -50 dB from the inband spectra. The complex gain predistorter exhibits two distinct advantages: a design engineer is not forced to back off a power amplifier to its linear but highly inefficient operating point; and adaptive correction allows the effects of frequency changes, drift in bias, operating point, aging and thermal stress to be readily compensated. >
