Electronic structure calculations on workstation computers: the program system turbomole

It is demonstrated that semiempirical methods give electrostatic potential (ESP) derived atomic point charges that are in reasonable agreement with ab initio ESP charges. Furthermore, we find that MNDO ESP charges are superior to AM1 ESP charges in correlating with ESP charges derived from the 6-31G* basis set. Thus, it is possible to obtain 6-31G* quality point charges by simply scaling MNDO ESP charges. The charges are scaled in a linear (y = Mx) manner to conserve charge. In this way researchers desiring to carry out force field simulations or minimizations can obtain charges by using MNDO, which requires much less computer time than the corresponding 6-31G* calculation.

MP2 energy evaluation by direct methods

A grid-based real-space implementation of the projector augmented wave (PAW) method of Bl\"ochl [Phys. Rev. B 50, 17953 (1994)] for density functional theory (DFT) calculations is presented. The use of uniform three-dimensional (3D) real-space grids for representing wave functions, densities, and potentials allows for flexible boundary conditions, efficient multigrid algorithms for solving Poisson and Kohn-Sham equations, and efficient parallelization using simple real-space domain-decomposition. We use the PAW method to perform all-electron calculations in the frozen core approximation, with smooth valence wave functions that can be represented on relatively coarse grids. We demonstrate the accuracy of the method by calculating the atomization energies of 20 small molecules, and the bulk modulus and lattice constants of bulk aluminum. We show that the approach in terms of computational efficiency is comparable to standard plane-wave methods, but the memory requirements are higher.

A direct MP2 gradient method

Recurrence expressions are derived for various types of molecular integrals over Cartesian Gaussian functions by the use of the recurrence formula for three‐center overlap integrals. A number of characteristics inherent in the recursive formalism allow an efficient scheme to be developed for molecular integral computations. With respect to electron repulsion integrals and their derivatives, the present scheme with a significant saving of computer time is found superior to other currently available methods. A long innermost loop incorporated in the present scheme facilitates a fast computation on a vector processing computer.
