A review of recent advances in the use of surface integral methods in Computational AeroAcoustics (CAA) for the extension of near-field CFD results to the acoustic far-field is given. These integral formulations (i.e. Kirchhoff's method, permeable (porous) surface FfowcsWilliams Hawkings (FW-H) equation) allow the radiating sound to be evaluated based on quantities on an arbitrary control surface if the wave equation is assumed outside. Thus only surface integrals are needed for the calculation of the far-field sound, instead of the volume integrals required by the traditional acoustic analogy method (i.e. Lighthill, rigid body FW-H equation). A numerical CFD method is used for the evaluation of the flow-field solution in the near field and thus on the control surface. Diffusion and dispersion errors associated with wave propagation in the far-field are avoided. Broadband slat noise prediction based on CAA and stochastic sound sources from a fast random particle-mesh (RPM) method

The flow around a generic airliner landing-gear truck is calculated using the methods of Detached-Eddy Simulation, and of Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations, with the Spalart-Allmaras one-equation model. The two simulations have identical numerics, using a multi-block structured grid with about 2.5 million points. The Reynolds number is 6×10 5 . Comparison to the experiment of Lazos shows that the simulations predict the pressure on the wheels accurately for such a massively separated flow with strong interference. DES performs somewhat better than URANS. Drag and lift are not predicted as well. The time-averaged and instantaneous flow fields are studied, particularly to determine their suitability for the physics-based prediction of noise. The two time-averaged flow fields are similar, though the DES shows more turbulence intensity overall. The instantaneous flow fields are very dissimilar. Detached-Eddy Simulations Over a Simplified Landing Gear

Unsteady computational simulations of a multi-element, high-lift configuration are performed. Emphasis is placed on accurate spatiotemporal resolution of the free shear layer in the slat-cove region. The excessive dissipative effects of the turbulence model, so prevalent in previous simulations, are circumvented by switching off the turbulence-production term in the slat cove region. The justifications and physical arguments for taking such a step are explained in detail. The removal of this excess damping allows the shear layer to amplify large-scale structures, to achieve a proper non-linear saturation state, and to permit vortex merging. The large-scale disturbances are self-excited, and unlike our prior fully turbulent simulations, no external forcing of the shear layer is required. To obtain the farfield acoustics, the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation is evaluated numerically using the simulated time-accurate flow data. The present comparison between the computed and measured farfield acoustic spectra shows much better agreement for the amplitude and frequency content than past calculations. The effect of the angle-of-attack on the slat's flow features radiated acoustic field are also simulated presented.

Time-Accurate Simulations and Acoustic Analysis of Slat Free Shear Layer

Numerical simulations are used to investigate the local and global dynamics of large-scale, three-dimensional vorticity structures within the free shear layer originating from the slat cusp of a multielement airfoil configuration. Results indicate that accounting for the local three-dimensionality of flow fluctuations leads to substantially improved agreement between the computed unsteady near-field solution and wind tunnel measurements based on particle image velocimetry. Analysis of simulation data indicates the potential significance of high intensity turbulent fluctuations near the reattachment location along the slat lower surface toward the generation of broadband slat noise. The computed acoustic characteristics, in terms of the frequency spectrum and spatial distribution within short distances from the slat, resemble the previously reported, subscale measurements of slat noise.

Effect of Three-Dimensional Shear-Layer Structures on Slat Cove Unsteadiness

An acoustic analysis based on the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation was performed for a high-lift system. As input, the acoustic analysis used unsteady flow data obtained from a highly resolved, time-dependent, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes caclulation. The analysis strongly suggests that vortex shedding from the trailing edge of the slat results in a high-amplitude, high-frequency acoustic signal, similar to that which was observed in a corresponding experimental study of the high-lift system.
