This paper is concerned with the direct transformation of austenite at high temperatures to form ferrite and alloy carbide dispersions. The ferrite/austenite interfaces vary from high energy random boundaries to low energy planar boundaries which grow by step propagation, while the alloy carbide morphologies include a pearlitic form, fine fibers and fine banded arrays of particles. It is shown that these morphologies are closely related to the mode of growth of the ferritic matrix. The role of various alloying elements on the carbide dispersion is examined, and the effects of other metallurgical variables on the banded dispersions are discussed, including factors which influence the dispersion stability. The mechanical properties of directly transformed alloy steels are shown to depend largely on the ferrite grain size and the state of the carbide dispersion. Micro-alloyed steels subjected to controlled rolling provide an excellent example of the achievement of high strength and toughness levels by control of these variables. The paper finally attempts to show how such benefits can be achieved in low and medium alloy steels, and in particular where resistance to creep failure at elevated temperatures is an important property.

Stress–strain behavior of ferrite and bainite with nano-precipitation in low carbon steels

The authors debate three topics central to the controversies which have enveloped the bainite reaction ever since it was first recognized as a distinctive mode of austenite decomposition. These include: “what is bainite?”, “the growth mechanism of the ferritic component of bainite”, and “the sources of bainitic carbide precipitation.” RFH concludes that bainite is the product of a shear transformation. Individual bainite plates are suggested to grow substantially more rapidly than volume diffusion-control allows, but a constraint such as the build-up of volume strain energy limits the extent of their growth. This mechanism of growth ensures extensive supersaturation of bainitic ferrite with respect to carbon. Whether or not carbides precipitate in association with bainite plates and whether the carbide is cementite ore, however, is a complex question in competitive reaction kinetics. New experimental evidence is presented to demonstrate thate carbide precipitated in lower bainite dissolves upon heating above the kinetic-B
 stemperature in an alloy steel containing 1.5 pct Si. This result is taken to support the existence of the metastable eutectoid reactionγ ⇌ α + e atca 350°C. HIA and KRK define bainite as the product of a nonlamellar eutectoid reaction. On this view, carbide precipitation thus plays an essential, rather than an ancillary role. Development of the Widmanstatten morphology by the ferritic component of bainite is shown to be inessential to the classification of a eutectoid structure as bainite. When this morphology is present, however, it is concluded to grow by the ledge mechanism, without the participation of shear, at rates of the order of or less than those allowed by volume diffusion-control. New experimental evidence is presented to show that the lengthening and thickening kinetics of individual plates within sheaves of upper bainite are consistent with this description. The results of a new calculation indicate that the initial carbon content of bainite plates lies between theα/α + Fe3C) and the extrapolatedα/(α+ γ) phase boundaries, in agreement with expectation from the ledge mechanism of growth.

A debate on the bainite reaction

Vanadium as an important alloying element in steels was initially associated with the properties achieved following tempering. Interest in the microstructure was stimulated by the advent of transmission electron microscopes with a resolution of ∼1 nm together with selected area electron diffraction techniques. A second timely development was that of controlled rolling, particularly of plate and sheet products. The scope of this review will include the historical background on quenched and tempered vanadium steels, precipitation during isothermal aging, conventional controlled rolling and during thin slab direct charging and the development of strength and toughness in vanadium microalloyed steels. Diffusional formation of ferrite in iron and its alloys

During the decomposition of austenite to ferrite in certain iron-base alloys a new form of precipitation has been observed at the ferrite/austenite interface. In appropriate alloys, V4C3, Mo2C, and Cr7C3 form very fine particles on the interface, which repeatedly moves on to provide fresh sites for further nucleation. The transformation leads to a very fine banded dispersion of carbide in ferrite having striking morphological differences from the same carbides in tempered martensite.
