Increasing use of the ground as a thermal reservoir is expected in the near future. Shallow geothermal energy (SGE) systems have proved to be sustainable alternative solutions for buildings and infrastructure conditioning in many areas across the globe in the past decades. Recently novel solutions, including energy geostructures, where SGE systems are coupled with foundation heat exchangers, have also been developed. The performance of these systems is dependent on a series of factors, among which the thermal properties of the soil play a major role. The purpose of this paper is to present, in an integrated manner, the main methods and procedures to assess ground thermal properties for SGE systems and to carry out a critical review of the methods. In particular, laboratory testing through either steady-state or transient methods are discussed and a new synthesis comparing results for different techniques is presented. In situ testing including all variations of the thermal response test is presented in detail, including a first comparison between new and traditional approaches. The issue of different scales between laboratory and in situ measurements is then analysed in detail. Finally, the thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of soil is introduced and discussed. These coupled processes are important for confirming the structural integrity of energy geostructures, but routine methods for parameter determination are still lacking.

Characterisation of Ground Thermal and Thermo-Mechanical Behaviour for Shallow Geothermal Energy Applications

Study on the mesostructural evolution mechanism of compacted loess subjected to various weathering actions

Natural aeolian sand has the characteristics of low cohesion and poor water stability. In order to improve its crack resistance properties in the process of freeze-thaw cycles, P.O 42.5 ordinary Portland cement was added to form a mixture called cement improved aeolian sand (CIAS). SEM was used to analyze the microscopic micro-structure of CIAS at different times (7 days and 28 days). The mechanical properties of CIAS samples affected by freeze-thaw cycles were tested in a triaxial instrument, and gray-scale images of the three-phase distribution in the CIAS after freeze-thaw cycling were obtained by computed tomography (CT) scanning technology. The pore characteristic parameters (pore area, fractal dimension, and crack length) were studied by digital image process technique. Based on classical Griffith fracture theory, the development of the crack length and crack width with increasing freeze-thaw cycles is determined. Assuming that the pore area subordinates to the Weibull distribution, the parameters of the Weibull distribution, the damage evolution defined by the elastic modulus attenuation, and the pore area development of CIAS were determined. Research shows the cohesion decreases and internal friction angle increases with increasing cycle numbers. Three development patterns are observed: crack growth, crack closure, and crack merging, and the three patterns interact during freeze-thaw cycling. Furthermore, the fractal dimension of the pore edge fluctuates with the increasing number of freeze-thaw cycles. This work provides a theoretical basis for the application of aeolian sand and develops a method for disaster prevention in applications of freeze-thaw cycling.

Effect of Freeze-Thaw Cycles on Triaxial Strength Property Damage to Cement Improved Aeolian Sand (CIAS).

Seasonal frozen soil is widely distributed in China. The seasonal freeze-thaw (F-T) process of soil will adversely affect the safety and service life of the engineering structures in these areas. Therefore, it is necessary to thoroughly study the main factors affecting the F-T process of soil and prevent or control F-T damage. This study first briefly introduces the distribution of seasonal frozen soil in China and the damage of soil after F-T. Then, on the one hand, it discusses the influencing trends of soil properties after freeze-thaw cycles (FTC) based on the different soil structure, compaction degree, moisture content, freezing temperature, and FTC times. On the other hand, it analyzes the present major project prevention and control measures to the damage of soils subjected to the F-T. This study highlights the positive effect of soil reinforcement on improving soil mechanical properties and reducing F-T destruction to the soil construction. Finally, it prospects the optimal reinforcement methods for all kinds of soils during different F-T conditions based on further theoretical research and practical experience.

Factors effecting the freeze thaw process in soils and reduction in damage due to frosting with reinforcement: a review

Lignin is the second-largest plant polymer on Earth after cellulose. About 98% of lignin produced in the papermaking and pulping industry is used for combustion heating or power generation. Less than 2% of lignin is used in more valuable fields, mainly in the formulation of dispersants, adhesives, and surfactants. Asphalt is one of the most important materials in pavement engineering. It is a dark brown complex mixture composed of hydrocarbons with different molecular weights and their non-metallic derivatives. Because the chemical structure of lignin is similar to that of asphalt, it is a carbon-based hydrocarbon material. More researchers studied the application of lignin in pavement engineering. In this paper, the structure, application, and extraction technology of lignin were summarized. This is a review article describing the different applications of lignin in pavement engineering and exploring the prospects of the application. There are three main types of pavement materials that can be used for lignin in pavement engineering, which are asphalt, asphalt mixture, and roadbed soil. In asphalt, lignin can be used as a modifier, extender, emulsifier, antioxidant, and coupling agent. In asphalt mixtures, lignin can be used as an additive. In road base soils, lignin can be used as a soil stabilizer. Furthermore, the article analyzed the application effects of lignin from the life cycle assessment. The conclusions suggest that lignin-modified asphalt exhibits more viscosity and hardness, and its high-temperature resistance and rutting resistance can be significantly improved compared with conventional asphalt. In addition, some lignin-modified asphalt binders exhibit reduced low-temperature crack resistance and fatigue resistance, which can be adjusted and selected according to the climate change in different regions. The performance of lignin as an asphalt mixture additive and asphalt extender has been proved to be feasible. Lignin can also produce good mechanical properties as well as environmental benefits as a soil stabilizer. In summary, lignin plays an important role in asphalt pavement and roadbed soil, and it is likely to be a development trend in the future due to its environmental friendliness and low cost. More research is needed to generalize the application of lignin in pavement engineering.

Review on Applications of Lignin in Pavement Engineering: A Recent Survey

Freezing-thawing cycles in soils reduce considerably the foundation capacity of buildings and infrastructure. In recent years, development of nontraditional stabilizers has created hundreds of new products for soil stabilization. Fiber portions of biomass (such as lignin) can be considered as byproducts of the conversion process, and these byproducts are generally used to produce octane booster fuels, bio-based products, and other chemical products. The use of lignin-based biofuel co-products (BCPs) to stabilize pavement subgrade soil is an innovative idea and satisfies the needs of sustainable development in construction. A series of laboratory tests, including unconsolidated undrained direct shear test, freeze-thaw durability test, and scanning electron microscope tests, was conducted to evaluate the effect of BCP addition on shear strength performance for four different soils encountered in Iowa. The results of this study indicate that BCPs are beneficial in the soil stabilization of low-quality materials for use in road construction.
