Mammalian fertilization requires the coordinated activity of motile spermatozoa, muscular contractions of the uterus and oviduct, as well as ciliary beating. These elastic structures generate forces that drive fluid motion, but their configurations are, in turn, determined by the fluid dynamics. We review the basic fluid mechanical aspects of reproduction, including flagellar/ciliary beating and peristalsis. We report on recent biological studies that have shed light on the relative importance of the mechanical ingredients of reproduction. In particular, we examine sperm motility in the reproductive tract, ovum pickup and transport in the oviduct, as well as sperm-egg interactions. We review recent advances in understanding the internal mechanics of cilia and flagella, flagellar surface interaction, sperm motility in complex fluids, and the role of fluid dynamics in embryo transfer. We outline promising computational fluid dynamics frameworks that may be used to investigate these complex, fluid-structure interactions.

Non-linear peristaltic transport of a second-order fluid through a porous medium

Here the Newtonian heating characteristics in MHD flow of Casson liquid induced by stretched cylinder moving with linear velocity is addressed. Consideration of dissipation and Joule heating characterizes the process of heat transfer. Applied electric and induced magnetic fields are not considered. Magnetic Reynolds number is low. The convenient transformation yields nonlinear problems which are solved for the convergent solutions. Convergence region is determined for the acquired solutions. Parameters highlighting for velocity and temperature are graphyically discussed. Numerical values of skin friction and Nusselt number are also presented in the tabular form. Present analysis reveals that velocity and thermal fields have reverse behavior for larger Hartman number. Moreover curvature parameter has similar influence on the velocity, temperature, skin friction and Nusselt number.

Magnetohydrodynamic flow of Casson fluid over a stretching cylinder

In this paper, an analysis is carried out for the similarity solution of the steady boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a Casson nanofluid flowing over a vertical cylinder which is stretching exponentially along its radial direction. Using boundary layer approach and suitable similarity transformation the governing partial differential equations with the boundary conditions are reduced to a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The resulting system is solved with the help of numerical technique, the Runge-Kutta Fehlberg method. The effects of important parameters such as Reynolds number, Prandtl number, Lewis number and the natural convection parameter are described through graphs.

A mathematical study of peristaltic transport of a casson fluid

In this paper, the peristaltic flow of rheologically complex physiological fluids when modelled by a non-Newtonian Casson fluid in a two-dimensional channel is considered. Of interest is the difference between peristaltic transport of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. A perturbation series method of solution of the stream function in amplitude ratio is sought. It is found that Newtonian fluid is an important sub-class of non-Newtonian fluids that may adequately represent some physiological phenomena. It is shown that for a Casson fluid, when certain simplifications and approximations are made in the most generalised form of constitutive equation, the fluid may be adequately represented as an improvement of a Newtonian fluid.

Biomathematical modelling of physiological fluids using a Casson fluid with emphasis to peristalsis.

The paper considers the phenomena of peristaltic transport of a non-Newtonian fluid represented as a power law fluid. The governing equations are the modified Navier-Stokes equations and the continuity equation in axisymmetric form. A solution is sought in terms of a perturbation series and it is shown the close proximity between analytical and numerical solutions when considering stream functions for various values of the flow behaviour index.
