Two novel methods to control the polarization of laser radiation are presented. The discrimination between different polarization distributions isperformed with a corrugation grating in the top high-index layer of a multilayer mirror, which couples the undesired polarization into a lossy waveguidemode of the multilayer. The generation of radially polarized radiation in a laser resonator is presented as a practical verification of the principle.

Efficient surface gratings are UV imprinted in an acrylate-rich hybrid solgel glass. Structural changes occurring in the material upon exposure to light are investigated. Large amplitude modulation (700 nm) and low surface roughness (0.2 nm) were measured by atomic force microscopy. Diffraction efficiencies were found to be close to theoretical predictions. The method of fabrication does not involve any etching step, and an all-UV process is proposed. The gratings are resistant to temperature and to solvent effects. These devices could have useful applications in sensor and spectroscopic devices.

Single-step UV recording of sinusoidal surface gratings in hybrid solgel glasses.

A method is presented that performs the exact electromagnetic analysis of 2D periodic dielectric structures of arbitrary profile or index distribution and possibly large period. The generalized source method is used to formulate the problem of light diffraction in the form of a volume integral equation reduced to a linear equation system, which is solvable by known fast algorithms. The calculation time and required memory are linearly proportional to the total number No of considered diffraction orders instead of No3 typical for conventional methods. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the potential of the method for the analysis of complex periodic structures.
