In this paper, we design and evaluate WiMAX network based on SCIS for application in Baghdad city. To meet users’ demands and QoS, we address design challenges like power control, frequency assignment, antenna height and tilt selection. In our design, three stages of network planning and dimensioning via coverage, interference mitigation, and capacity dimensioning are proposed. ICS Telecom software is used to evaluate our design. Results have shown that our design yields 80% coverage of the Baghdad City with 55% decrease in interfered area and the network covering 1000 subscribers of which 93.4% is based on their QoS requirements.

WiMAX Network Aided SCIS for Baghdad City: Design and Analysis Using ICS Telecom

In the last decade WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) was appeared in Erbil. For maximizing the company profits, operators have to improve the quality of their networks, this can be done through setting a well-studied plan for their network infrastructures in terms of cost. Researchers proposed various models to solve the planning problem, but most of them ignored some performance measures that this paper used to evaluate the proposed method with the existing approach , those performance measures are upload consideration, some Key Performance Indicators such as throughput estimation, the total number of connected/rejected users (%) within all tried others and Block Error Rate (BLER). Previous method to solve network planning was manual method, but due to problematic complication and dealing with many factors, it is impossible to find optimal network configuration using a manual method. Thus, in this paper automated wireless network planning and optimization is used to solve the problem by sequential approach that divides the entire problems to sub-problems. This paper addresses the planning, evaluation, analysis, optimization, and multi-objective system performance of a network on the mobile WiMAX standard, namely (IEEE 802.16e) in the city of Erbil. A new model for planning problem of such network was proposed, the objectives of the proposed model are not only to identify optimal amount, but also the optimum location of Base Stations (BSs) in targeted areas. In addition, the proposed model decomposes the entire problem into three different phases dimensioning, frequency allocation and optimization. The feasibility of the final network designs evaluated by the FORSK-ATOLL simulator. Moreover, multi-objective network planning results demonstrate that the proposed model can reach high system performance with cost-effective network infrastructure. This has been achieved by comparing the proposed model with the existing model of Newroz Tel Company in the city of Erbil, which resulted in reducing cost by 20% of total cost.

Multi-objective Model for IEEE 802.16e Network Planning and Optimization

The powerful of WiMAX technique for providing the Subscribers (SSs) with a flexible interface to share resources is based on an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA). Conventional access schemes base on fixed parameters for all SSs in the networks without considering the effects of various channel characteristics among them. This motivates the authors to propose a new Adaptive Resource Allocation Scheme (ARAS) to construct the OFDMA based frame. The proposed ARAS integrates two approaches, the adaptive Cyclic Prefix (CP) length and dynamic frequency allocation. These two approaches are implemented, analyzed and evaluated based on the simulation of WiMAX frames in a dynamic manner resulting in a new frame pattern within each down link connection. The resulting frame shows the contribution of the time domain approach which represented by adaptive CP in mitigation ISI and ICI which improves the network performance in term of BER, where enhancement of 7 dB in SNR was gained at BER equals to 10-3 compared with the network which adopts fixed guard interval equals to 1/8. From the other side, the frequency domain approach, which represented by the dynamic frequency allocation proves its effectiveness in supporting the QoS requirements in term of data rate.

Performance Enhancement by Adaptive Resource Allocation in WiMAX Networks

The Wireless Interoperability Microwave Access (WiMAX) system in this paper makes use of various forward error correction codes to improve and hence optimize the performance of the system. Two diverse fading channels have been used to study the response of the WiMAX system based on Forward Error Correction (FEC) encoding and M-ary Phase Shift Keying (M-PSK) modulation. Since WiMAX is used for both Line Of Sight (LOS) and Non Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) communication so, Rayleigh and Rician channels have been used, out of which one has LOS component, and other has no LOS component. The performance of WiMAX system has been studied by analyzing the graphs between Bit Error Rate (BER) and Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) for all the different cases. It is observed that out of all coding techniques reed Solomon (RS) encoding techniques performs better at lower order modulation schemes by providing the BER of 10-3 at lower values of SNR in comparison to all other FEC encoding techniques. But, at higher order modulation level turbo encoding scheme outperform all other FEC schemes. Also, out of channels rician channel has a better response because of one strong line of sight constituent in comparison to Rayleigh fading channel. Further, modified FEC encoding schemes can be incorporated to enhance the BER performance of the WiMAX system.

Optimized WiMAX System over Fading Channels Using FEC Codes

The measurement and analysis of penetration loss into building plays an important role in calculating the indoor coverage in wireless communication networks. In order to get an empirical model for this loss, several measurements of BPL in different areas in the Libyan capital; Tripoli were undertaken.

Practical investigation of building penetration loss in Tripoli area

WiMAX is a standard based on wireless technology that provides high throughput broadband connections over long distance. This technology can be used for a number of applications, including “last mile” broadband connections, hotspots and high-speed connectivity for business customers. The objective of this article is to propose an approach to design a network on the latest standard of WiMAX namely (802.16m) and to use it dimensioning and planning such network in Tripoli Area. In this article a review of WiMAX technology was given, followed by its standard with focusing on 802.16m standard. A design approach was developed to help network planner in their work, this approach was summarized in a simple flow chart. As a case study, a network based on this technology was designed for Tripoli area. The number of subscriber was calculated for each district area and plotted in a clutter map. The Building Penetration Losses for each type of area were modeled using several measurements conducted as a part of this work. The design outcome (number of base station and there distribution) where found less than the existing ones in the operating network.
