Knowledge sharing strategies in university libraries in KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa.

The article aims to identify the academic publishing environment of academics by analysing the existing literature in the studies related to academic publishing. A socioeconomic and political approach to academic publishing is adopted in this article to identify the multi-dimensions of the academic publishing. The analysis reveals that challenges as well as the perspective of publishing industry dominate the existing literature in academic publishing. Though, the existing studies address the business and economic perspective of academic publishing, the role of academic publishing within the field of higher education needs to be examined and end explored to understand the dynamics of the relationship, and inter-dependency between academics and the field of academic publishing. In the process of achieving the aim of understanding academic publishing, this article offers a foundation for establishing the relevance of adopting Bourdieu’s concepts for exploring the publishing practices of academics.

Exploring the teaching-research nexus in college based and university higher education

Social networks are among the most popular interactive media today due to their simplicity and their ability to break down the barriers of community rules and their speed and because of the increasing pressures of work environments that make it more difficult for people to visit or call friends. There are many social networking products available and they are widely used for social interaction. As the amount of threading data is growing, producing analysis from this large volume of communications is becoming increasingly difficult for public and private organisations. One of the important applications of this work is to determine the trends in social networks that depend on identifying relationships between members of a community. This is not a trivial task as it has numerous challenges. Information shared between social members does not have a formal data structure but is transmitted in the form of texts, emoticons, and multimedia. The inspiration for addressing this area is that if a company is advertising a sports product, for example, it has a difficulty in identifying targeted samples of Arab people on social networks who are interested in sports. In order to accomplish this, an experiment oriented approach is adopted in this study. A goal for this company is to discover users who have been interacting with other users who have the same interests, so they can receive the same type of message or advertisement. This information will help a company to determine how to develop advertisements based on Arab people’s interests. Examples of such work include the timely advertisement of the utilities that can be effectively marketed to increase the audience; for example, on the weekend days, the effective market approaches can yield considerable results in terms of increasing the sales and profits. In addition, finding an efficient way to recommend friends to a user based on interest similarity, celebrity degree, and online behaviour is of interest to social networks themselves. This problem is explored to establish and apply an efficient and easy way to classify a social network of Arab users based on their interests using available types of information, whether textual or nontextual, and to try to increase the accuracy of interest classification. Since most of the social networking is done from the mobiles nowadays, the efficient and reliable algorithm can help in developing a robust app that can perform the tweet classification on mobile phones.

Dr. Munigal has assembled an impressive team of eighteen esteemed higher education library and information professionals from several continents to share theoretical and practical insights into these important issues. Since the middle of the 1990's, the processes and products of scholarly research and the impact of scholarship have evolved exponentially. The advent of the Web and of ever more powerful digital tools and publishing platforms has stressed traditional notions of scholarly value, quality and impact, which remained relatively stable for nearly a century. The encouragement and requirement to publish the prescribed types of products in clearly identified publications (esteemed publishing houses and peer-reviewed journals) exerted steady and firm control for academic gatekeepers, who decided, which scholars survived and throve (achieving tenure and promotion) and which scholars perished (being denied tenure and promotion) in the closed academic society. Academic research, the channels and opportunities for communication of academic scholarship, and the evolving notions and varieties of academic scholarly publishing have changed significantly since the advent of the Web in the mid-1990's. This change is ongoing and relentless, such that scholars and academicians must work to not only perform research and gather the core of their research into publishable products, but they must also remain conversant with the stream of digital research and publication tools and platforms, opportunities for greater incorporation of media (static or dynamic) into their scholarly products, and negotiate new issues of access, of copyright and of intellectual property rights. Scholars and academicians must now also forge partnerships with digital media (hardware and software) and copyright experts, entrepreneurs and social media leaders to ensure maximal, or at least greater, impact and visibility for their scholarly work. They must navigate these issues while at the same time surviving and thriving in the publish-or-perish

Scholarly Communication and the Publish or Perish Pressures of Academia

Philanthropy is regarded as a voluntary private virtue for public good. Terms like Gifting, charity, fundraising, contributions, generosity, donations, aid, bequests, offerings, handouts, patronage are sometimes synonymously or interchangeably used for philanthropy. There are public, private, corporate philanthropic foundations all over the world, that work in collaboration with NGOs and other governmental organisations towards social good. Despite economic challenges faced worldwide, global philanthropy is predicted to continue its growth. In the age of declining financial assistance for libraries, un-certain economic condition, budget cuts libraries are facing a lot of economic crunch. To preserve libraries, philanthropy is most crucial and essential. Most of general public do not have multi-million dollar fortunes to donate, but this does not mean that smaller donations have less impact than larger ones. Libraries depend on various forms of giving. This paper investigates philanthropy with special reference to libraries in India.

Philanthropy in Libraries

Library and Information Science (LIS) education started in the year 1911 in India yet there is no code of ethics and professional conduct for LIS professionals till date. This paper suggests and presents a code that is based upon internationally acknowledged ethical standards and principles. In the absence of any government agency to suggest or approve an LIS ethical code, any professional association of national stature or LIS associations in India can meet on a common platform to brainstorm and bring out a final collaborative document to be implemented.

Misconduct in research is damaging not only to authors, researchers and scientists but also publishers, institution and the country. This paper presents motivations of academics, researchers & scientists to commit research misconduct and how to combat it. The current social and legal scenario in Indian research front is discussed.
