A striding exercise device includes a base having two elongated parallel tracks which curve upwardly in a constant radial arc, and two footskates which are rotatably supported on the tracks for reciprocating movement thereon. The radial arc generally corresponds to the natural swinging arc of a human leg as the leg pivots about the hip. When the operator stands on the footskates and reciprocates the footskates back and forth along the upwardly curved tracks, the operator's torso is maintained in a stationary and balanced position over the base. The reduction in torso movement substantially eliminates strain on the leg joints, particularly the knee and hip joints, caused by up and down movement of the torso and further substantially eliminates back strain caused by reaching and bending at the waist.

An improved cross-country skiing simulating exercise machine for providing interactive aerobic conditioning has a base frame, a pair of foot skates movably mounted on the frame, and a pair of arm poles attached to the frame. The frame has two elongate parallel rails, suitably made of extruded aluminum, each having sidewalls with an elongate groove therein with recesses within the grooves thereby forming sidewall tracks. The skates are securely and movably mounted on the rails and have an inclined top surface sloping downwardly in a forwardly direction and a toe kick at their forward end. The arm poles are at the sides of the front end of the frame, and an electronic sensing, control and display assembly is mounted on the frame between the arm poles. An interactive video skate resistance mechanism for automatically adjusting the difficulty of moving the skates is provided.

The right pedal assembly, operating independently of the left pedal assembly and having a set of rollers engaged with the track, oscillates between an upper position at rest and a lower position under the weight of the user. The left pedal assembly, operating independently of the right pedal assembly and having a set of rollers engaged with the track, oscillates between an upper position at rest and a lower position under the weight of the user. The pedal assemblies remain parallel to a support surface throughout their entire range of motion, as the pedal assemblies travel from their upper position to their lower position.
