Well-being is most commonly used in philosophy to describe what is non-instrumentally or ultimately good for a person. The question of what well-being consists in is of independent interest, but it is of great importance in moral philosophy, especially in the case of utilitarianism, according to which the only moral requirement is that well-being be maximized. Significant challenges to the very notion have been mounted, in particular by G.E. Moore and T.M. Scanlon. It has become standard to distinguish theories of well-being as either hedonist theories, desire theories, or objective list theories. According to the view known as welfarism, well-being is the only value. Also important in ethics is the question of how a person’s moral character and actions relate to their well-being. 1. Bellagio STAMP: Principles for sustainability assessment and measurement

This is the Australian Government’s third intergenerational report. The report provides a basis for considering the Australian Government’s fiscal outlook over the long term and the sustainability of economic growth in light of Australia’s ageing population and other factors. The report provides an update of the long-term demographic, economic and spending projections and the implications for the sustainability of fiscal policy. Broad policy choices to address the sustainability challenges are discussed.

Australia to 2050: future challenges

It is increasingly necessary to quantify the impacts of climate change on populations, and to quantify the effectiveness of mitigation and adaptation strategies. Despite growing interest in the health effects of climate change, the relationship between mental health and climate change has received little attention in research or policy. Here, we outline current thinking about climate change and mental health, and discuss crucial limitations in modern epidemiology for examining this issue. A systems approach, complemented by a new style of research thinking and leadership, can help align the needs of this emerging field with existing and research policy agendas.

Over the last three decades, a number of frameworks have been developed to promote and measure
well-being, quality of life, human development and sustainable development. Some frameworks use a
conceptual approach while others employ a consultative approach, and different initiatives to measure
progress will require different frameworks. The aim of this paper is to present a proposed framework
for measuring the progress of societies, and to compare it with other progress frameworks that are
currently in use around the world. The framework does not aim to be definitive, but rather to suggest a
common starting point that the authors believe is broad-based and flexible enough to be applied in
many situations around the world. It is also the intention that the framework could be used to identify
gaps in existing statistical standards and to guide work to fill these gaps.

Pendant les trois dernieres decennies, un certain nombre de cadres ont ete developpes afin de promouvoir et mesurer le bien-etre, la qualite de la vie, le developpement humain et le developpement durable. Quelques cadres se servent d’une approche conceptuelle tandis que d'autres emploient une approche consultative. Des initiatives differentes pour mesurer le progres exigeront des cadres differents. Ce papier a pour objectif de presenter une proposition de cadre pour mesurer le progres de societes et de le comparer avec d'autres cadres de progres qui sont utilises en ce moment a travers le monde. Le cadre n'aspire pas a etre definitif, mais suggere plutot un point de depart commun que les auteurs croient universel et assez flexible pour etre applique dans un grand nombre de situations a travers le monde. L'intention est egalement que ce cadre puisse etre utilise pour identifier des lacunes dans les normes statistiques existantes et guider le travail afin de combler ces lacunes.

A Framework to Measure the Progress of Societies

In this paper different phases of the treatment of text are sketched, in order to link them both with some lexical characteristics of the analised corpus and with multidimensional techniques useful for the statistical content analysis of the latter. Our proposal is directed towards maintaining intact the system of meanings present in the corpus and to bettering the degree of monosemy of words. In this way a corpus vocabulary of mixed units of analysis is realised.

A Paradigmatic Path for Statistical Content Analysis Using an Integrated Package of Textual Data Treatment

Life satisfaction is one of the key indicators of subjective well-being. This paper aims to give a methodological contribution to the study of the factors influencing life satisfaction by emphasising the ordinal nature of this variable.
 Although life satisfaction is customarily treated like a numerical variable in the literature on indicators of quality of life, we consider it important to fully respect its ordinal nature. In this paper we use an ordinal classification tree-based technique to show the effect of disadvantages on life satisfaction, and we implement an original impurity measure that takes into account the ordinal nature of life satisfaction and, at the same time, the heterogeneity of its ordered categories. The technique shows that, in general, the higher the level of disadvantages, the lower the life satisfaction, and that economic factors are very important in the quality of social relationships by acting as a tipping point for the quality of life.
