Malnutrition is one of the most important geriatric syndromes in the elderly. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between anemia and malnutrition in elderly nursing home residents.

Anemia prevalence and hematologic findings in German geriatric inpatients – results of the prospective cross-sectional multicenter study “GeriAnaemie 2013”

Anemia is a public health problem in Ethiopia. In spite of the fact that anemia is a common health burden with much severe consequences, the prevalence of the different types of anemia and its severity have not yet been well documented in different parts of the country. The study aimed to assess the prevalence of different types of anemia, including severity and association with age and sex of study population. Four hundred anemic patients who are men and non-pregnant women above 15 years of age were selected from patients visiting the laboratory for Complete Blood Count (CBC) investigation. The type and severity of anemia were assessed based on red cell indices and haemoglobin levels respectively. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 19. Chi square was used at 95% confidence interval, considering P < 0.05 statistically significant for association among categorical variables. The overall prevalence of anemia in the study was 13%. Majority of cases had mild anemia 58.5%, while 19.0%, and 22.5% of the patients had moderate and severe anemia respectively. Overall, the prevalence of mild anemia increases with age, while the prevalence of moderate and severe anemia decreases as age increases. In the present study, the most common anemia was normocytic, which mostly occur in the elderly (61–85) years of age. The CBC parameters help to diagnose and classify anemia in to major components, which might help for a better treatment practice in developing countries, where additional investigations are not available for a reliable diagnosis and classification of anemia. Despite resource limitations in developing countries, additional anaemia work up such as iron studies and markers of inflammation, will provide a more efficient diagnosis of anaemia.

Prevalence of anemia among adults at Hawassa University referral hospital, Southern Ethiopia

The data on the prevalence of nutritional anemia among the urban elderly population in India was limited. Hence, the present study was carried out with an aim to assess the prevalence of nutritional anemia and its association with vitamin B12, folate, ferritin and homocystine among the urban elderly population. A community- based cross-sectional study was carried out among 282 urban elderly (≥ 60 years) subjects (186 males and 96 females) in Hyderabad. Fasting blood samples were collected and hemoglobin (Hb) was estimated by cyanmethemoglobin method. Plasma Folic acid and vitamin B12 levels were estimated by RIA and homocysteine and ferritin levels were estimated by ELISA methods. The overall prevalence of anemia (Hb < 12 g/dL for females and < 13 g/dL for males) among the urban elderly was 20.6% and the prevalence was found to be increasing with the age. The prevalence of vitamin B12 (< 203 pg/mL), folic acid (< 4 ng/mL), ferritin (< 15 ng/mL) and hyperhomocysteinemia (≥ 12 µmol/L) in these subjects was 36.0%, 8.2%, 1.1% and 24.3% respectively. The prevalence of anemia due to deficiencies of iron (ferritin < 15 ng/mL), folate and vitamin B12 was 5.45%, 9.1% and 42.3% respectively. A significant association was observed between the prevalence of anemia with ferritin and hyperhomocysteinemia. In conclusion, the prevalence of anemia and nutritional anemia among the urban-based elderly was 20.6% and 56.85% respectively. The association of anemia with hyperhomocysteinemia needs further studies.

Prevalence of Nutritional Anemia and Hyperhomocysteinemia in Urban Elderly.

Anemia is common in elderly people and especially in nursing home residents. Few studies have been performed on the consequences of anemia in a nursing home population. This study explored the prevalence of anemia in nursing homes in Sweden, including risk factors and mortality associated with anemia or hemoglobin (Hb) decline. Three hundred ninety patients from 12 nursing homes were included during 2008–2011. Information about medication, blood samples, questionnaire responses and information about physical and social activities was recorded. The baseline characteristics of the patients were compared for subjects with and without anemia. Vital status was ascertained during the following 7 years from baseline to compare the survival. Hb levels 100 ng/L) and severely reduced eGFR (  9 g/L) was compared with the highest (improvement > 6 g/L) the mortality was higher in the lowest quartile (p = 0.03). Anemia is common in nursing home residents in Sweden, especially among men for whom it is related to higher mortality. A rapid Hb drop is associated with higher mortality. Regardless of earlier Hb values, monitoring Hb regularly in a nursing home population seems important for catching rapid Hb decline correlated with higher mortality.

Prevalence and predictive importance of anemia in Swedish nursing home residents – a longitudinal study

Objective: To demonstrate the proportion of anemia and its association with demographic and clinical characteristics in a representative sample of elderly people from Sao Jose dos Campos, Sao Paulo. Methods: Demographic data and blood samples were collected from 398 over 65-year-old male and female individuals. Anemia was deﬁned as hemoglobin concentration 75-80, >85-90 and >90-95 years (p-value = 0.0251). There were no signiﬁcant differences in gender, ethnic background, place of residence, years of schooling, income, comorbidities and use of medications. Accord- ing to gender, the mean hemoglobin concentration and mean corpuscular volume were 11.5 g/dL (range: 8.4-11.9 g/dL) and 90.7 fL (range: 63.0-111.7 fL) for women and 11.9 g/dL (range: 8.6-12.8 g/dL) and 92.1 fL (range: 59.8-100.1 fL) for men. The great majority of ane- mia cases were mild with less than 6% having hemoglobin concentrations below 10.9 g/dL. Mean corpuscular volume was lower than 80 fL in six cases (8%), between 80 and 100 fL in 65 cases (88%) and higher than 100 fL in three cases (4%). Conclusion: A total of 18.6% of elderly people from Sao Jose dos Campos had mild anemia with the majority being normocytic. The percentages of anemia rose as the age increased demonstrating an association between age and anemia.

Prevalence of anemia in a sample of elderly southeastern Brazilians

Objective - To demonstrate the demographic and clinical aspects as well as the overall survival (OS) rates of patients treated with autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) in Vale do Paraiba-SP. Methods - Retrospective analysis of 129 patients from Pio XII Hospital of Sao Jose dos Campos that received treatment between 2005 and 2011. Data from the pronctuaries of the patients, number of CD34+ cells reinfused, viability of defrosted CD34+ cells, reactions induced by dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), time to recover neutrophils and platelets count and an- timicrobial agents prescribed were collected. Five-year OS was measured in patients with multiple myeloma (MM), Hodgkins lymphoma (HL) and non-Hodgkins lymphoma (NHL). Results - The median age was 51 years (18-70) among the 129 patients selected (67 male and 62 female). 63 had MM, 25 HL, 24 NHL, 9 germ cell tumors, 7 acute myeloid leukemia and 1 acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The median of number of CD34+ cells reinfused was 6.02 x 10 6 /kg (2.23-15.7) with 79% (62-93%) of viable cells after defrost. Times to neutrophils and platelets count recovery were 12 (9-18) and 13 (10-21) days, respectively. Three patients showed DMSO-induced reactions. Thirty three pa- tients (25.6%) were treated with antifungal in association with extended spectrum antibiotic. Five-year OS were 57.7% (CI 33.8-71.5) for MM patients, 76.8% (CI 52.5-89.7) for HL and 69.2% (CI 46.9-83.6) for NHL. Conclusions - The collected data provided evidence that the ASCT in Vale do Paraiba has favorable OS rates for patients with MM, HL and NHL in comparison to previously reported data from similar treatment in other regions. Anemia has a great impact on cognitive development and physical growth in preschool-aged children.1 In Brazil, anemia rates in children vary according to region, age group and sample.2–4 The present study measured the prevalence of anemia in a representative sample of 2673 schoolchildren enrolled in the first and second grades (6 and 7 years old) of 40 schools in the city of São José dos Campos, State of São Paulo. The study used data from the Pincel Mágico program5 which counts on the support of the Health and Education Departments. The program aims to identify signs, pathological tendencies or established diseases as well as to promote better health conditions in the school environment. The methods of this program, including procedures, sample design, blood collec5 tion and ethical aspects, have been described previously. The World Health Organization (WHO) criteria were used to define anemia (hemoglobin < 11.5 g/dL) and assess the severity.6 The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Universidade Paulista (UNIP) (#402630).
