A survey of communication/networking in Smart Grids

This article surveys research in service advertising, discovery, and selection for mobile ad hoc networks and related issues. We include a categorization of service discovery architectures for MANETs and their modes of operation, presenting their merits and drawbacks. We pay particular attention to cross-layer service discovery - a special class of efficient service discovery approaches for MANETs. We also present security issues and discuss service description options, service selection mechanisms, and service-state maintenance techniques. We conclude with a summary, an outlook, and directions for future research in this area.

Intermediate Microeconomics I

The concept of microgrid has emerged as a feasible answer to cope with the increasing number of distributed renewable energy sources which are being introduced into the electrical grid. The microgrid communication network should guarantee a complete and bidirectional connectivity among the microgrid resources, a high reliability and a feasible interoperability. This is in a contrast to the current electrical grid structure which is characterized by the lack of connectivity, being a centralized-unidirectional system. In this paper a review of the microgrids information and communication technologies (ICT) is shown. In addition, a guideline for the transition from the current communication systems to the future generation of microgrid communications is provided. This paper contains a systematic review of the most suitable communication network topologies, technologies and protocols for smart microgrids. It is concluded that a new generation of peer-to-peer communication systems is required towards a dynamic smart microgrid. Potential future research about communications of the next microgrid generation is also identified.

Current challenges and future trends in the field of communication architectures for microgrids

Service discovery is essential for many wireless applications, yet it is more difficult to achieve in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETS) than in both wired and traditional wireless networks due to the lack of central control. In addition, the heterogeneity, mobility and limited energy of the mobile devices precludes the use of traditional service discovery protocols. This paper presents HESED, a fundamentally different service discovery protocol based on multicast query and multicast reply. Clients multicast service queries and matching servers multicast their response to all nodes. The service information is cached by all and may be used in place of future queries. HESED also eliminates the effect of asymmetric links, providing reliability for its forwarding algorithms. The packet complexity of HESED is shown to be O(N) for N-node MANETs, as opposed to O(N²) for traditional service discovery schemes. Simulation results show that HESED significantly outperforms a Traditional On-demand Service Discovery (TOSD) algorithm.

A New Approach to Service Discovery in Wireless Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

A synergy exists between MANETs and P2P networks since both are decentralized and have dynamic topologies. This paper presents a utility-based incentive scheme for P2P file sharing over MANETs, designed to encourage users to contribute to the network by sharing files. The scheme combines a virtual pricing mechanism with file transfer delay estimation and allows users to choose the best peer to download from based on their preference for price vs. delay. Users can choose to lower the delay experienced or focus on obtaining files for the lowest price. Simulation results show that the utility-based scheme does a much better job of promoting sharing of files by users in comparison to an unpriced and a fixed price scheme, the delay per downloaded file tends to be lower, and the MANET has a greater network lifetime.

As infrastructureless mobile networks, MANETs (Mobile Ad hoc NETworks) have no central control and are self organized. This makes service discovery more difficult to achieve than in both wired networks and traditional, infrastructured, wireless mobile networks. Since most wireless applications invoke services during their lifetime, service discovery is essential. Traditional service discovery protocols cannot be applied directly to MANETs because of their heterogeneity and mobility. Additionally, since devices are battery powered, energy is an important concern. This paper presents HESED, an efficient service discovery protocol based on multicast query and multicast reply, in which after a client multicasts its query, all matching servers multicast their information to all nodes, which in turn cache this service information. This idea makes HESED fundamentally different from existing service discovery protocols. Clients evaluate and utilize the cached information, thereby reducing many potential queries. HESED also eliminates the effect of asymmetric links, providing reliable connections for the forwarding algorithms presented.
