Analysing Qualitative Data

Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play an important role in the European economy. A critical challenge faced by SME leaders, as a consequence of the continuing digital technology revolution, is how to optimally align business strategy with digital technology to fully leverage the potential offered by these technologies in pursuit of longevity and growth. There is a paucity of empirical research examining how e-leadership in SMEs drives successful alignment between business strategy and digital technology fostering longevity and growth. To address this gap, in this paper we develop an empirically derived e-leadership model. Initially we develop a theoretical model of e-leadership drawing on strategic alignment theory. This provides a theoretical foundation on how SMEs can harness digital technology in support of their business strategy enabling sustainable growth. An in-depth empirical study was undertaken interviewing 42 successful European SME leaders to validate, advance and substantiate our theoretically driven model. The outcome of the two stage process – inductive development of a theoretically driven e-leadership model and deductive advancement to develop a complete model through in-depth interviews with successful European SME leaders – is an e-leadership model with specific constructs fostering effective strategic alignment. The resulting diagnostic model enables SME decision makers to exercise effective e-leadership by creating productive alignment between business strategy and digital technology improving longevity and growth prospects.

e-Leadership through strategic alignment: an empirical study of small- and medium-sized enterprises in the digital age

There is an abundant literature about the individual entrepreneurship (entrepreneurs) and about corporate entrepreneurship within organizations, but little is written about a related concept like Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) in small businesses, and also, about how to describe its usefulness for their strategic formulation.The paper attempts to identify main attributes of the EO concept, and its determinants within small business context. It clearly appears that EO consists of three components: Innovativeness, risk-taking, and proactiveness of strategic leaders in these firms. An innovative small business will not be an entrepreneurial if it does not take risks or is not sufficiently proactive towards competitors and environment. After describing the emergence of this concept, the paper shows the importance of the EO as a valid strategic orientation for small businesses when they rethink their strategic analyses with Opportunity-based and Resource-based views. Adopting such orientation seems to reflect a needed conciliation between other strategic orientations (market-, technology- and stakeholder orientations) and altogether a mixing of them. Finally, the paper concludes with proposing some implications for future research to deepen the study (conceptually and empirically) of the EO within small business context.

A Conceptual Approach of the Entrepreneurial Orientation Within the Small Business Context

Most of SMEs in Malaysia are in the services industry. The industry is believed to largely contribute to Malaysia’s economy. The success and performance of services SMEs are obviously depended upon several contributing factors – managers’ leadership skills and qualities are reported to be two of them. The current study, aims to investigate the impact of leadership behaviours on the performance of services SMEs in Malaysia. 193 owners and top managers of services SMEs in Malaysia participated in the study. The results revealed that: a) there were significant relationships between different leadership behaviours and organisational performance of services SMEs; and b) transformational leadership contributed more significantly to the performance of SMEs than transactional leadership behaviour. The findings implicate that leadership behaviour of leaders of SMEs is one of the essential factors that influences SMEs performance in the services sector.

LEADERSHIP AND PERFORMANCE: THE CASE OF MALAYSIAN SMEs IN THE SERVICES SECTOR

A review of literature suggests that there is a lack of understanding in regards to leadership behaviours among Malaysian business leaders. This study is significant in providing a clear understanding of this issue. First, the authors aim to investigate the forms of leadership behaviours being practiced by leaders of SMEs in Malaysia and whether these leadership practices are applicable within the scope of Malaysian SMEs. Second, this paper intends to explore whether leadership is important within the context of SMEs in Malaysia. Based on semi-structured interviews, it was found that leadership is important towards the success of entrepreneurial firms. Entrepreneurs who possess effective leadership behaviours tend to enhance their entrepreneurial success. It can be concluded that leaders of SMEs in Malaysia tend to practice more of transformational leadership than transactional leadership qualities and the vast transformation that the country has went through allows for adaptability of western management theories into Malaysian business practices. The originality of this paper lies on being the first to examine the leadership behaviours of Malaysian SMEs from a qualitative perspective.

The relationship between leadership behaviour, entrepreneurial orientation and organisational performance in Malaysian small and medium enterprises.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship of good university governance, teaching quality of lecturers and student satisfaction. It also aims to examine the effect of learning facilities on good university governance and student satisfaction. 361 students of the Faculty of Economics, Semarang State University, were involved in this study using proportionate random sampling. Then, to gather the data, a questionnaire was distributed, and the data were analyzed by applying SEM-PLS. The results showed that good university governance, teaching quality of lecturers, and learning facilities had a positive and significant effect on student satisfaction. The teaching quality of lecturers is proven to be influenced by good university governance. In addition, learning facilities also have a significant effect on good university governance.

The Relationship of Good University Governance and Student Satisfaction.

The study focused on the relationship between transformational leadership and entrepreneurial orientation. There were 325 respondents representing either the owner or top manager of SME establishments operating in manufacturing or services industry involved in this study. A cross-sectional survey and structured questionnaire were used for data collection. A quantitative survey was designed using self-administrative questionnaire. Based on the findings, transformational leadership and all of its factors are having a significant positive correlation with entrepreneurial orientation. Also, it was found that inspirational motivation and intellectual stimulation of transformational leadership contribute significantly towards entrepreneurial orientation.
