What is XR? Towards a Framework for Augmented and Virtual Reality

During the years common understanding of the possibilities and perspectives of Virtual Reality (VR) usage has been changed. It is thought that VR is mainly used in entertainment purposes, but it is being used already for many years in different industries, and now with easier access to the hardware it became a helpful and accessible tool that could be used and developed in any field of human activities. In manufacturing, immersive technologies are mainly used nowadays for the visualisation of processes and products combining those visuals into \nthe factory Digital Twin (DT) which is possible to view from the inside look. This feature is already being used in several manufacturing simulation tools, which enable to view onto industrial line / robotic cells via Virtual Reality glasses. However, the potential of using simulations with VR in manufacturing is not fully uncovered. The main aim of this, industrial robotics targeted research is to enable besides simulation also universal control algorithms through Virtual Reality experience, produced by game engine Unity3D, which can be easily modified for a wide range of industrial equipment. THE ORIGINAL Amazon Echo speaker/personal assistant has been one of the more successful consumer electronics products of the past year. Having shipped three million according to analyst Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, Amazon is looking to extend the range in form factor, portability and price. Two variations have just launched in the US. The Amazon Tap, the subject of this teardown, is a smaller, battery-powered Echo. The Amazon Echo Dot is a hockey-puck-sized and mainspowered version. The Tap costs $150 (£103 pre-VAT) and the Dot is $90. Echo continues to retail at $180. The company says that it will roll out the new products in the UK and the rest of the world during 2016.

The performance of ventilation heat recovery has high impact to the total energy consumption of modern buildings and its sub-optimal performance results in a remarkable energy penalty. There are several issues, which can significantly affect the heat recovery efficiency such as the inaccuracy of sensors, errors in control systems, mechanical defects and incorrect setting of the system. In addition, the direct comparison of the designed and measured heat recovery efficiency is not necessarily meaningful due to varying boundary conditions e.g. mass flow rates. The main focus of this paper is to develop and demonstrate a simple automated method for monitoring the heat recovery efficiency of ventilation units using building monitoring system (BMS). As the supply and extract air mass flows and temperatures may differ from the calculated initial design parameters, the proposed solution is to analyse the heat recovery efficiency using the number of transfer unit (NTU) method. With this method the efficiency is always calculated by the limiting mass flow, meaning that the warm exhaust air can not transfer more energy to the cold supply air than it is able to contain. As a result, the NTU method gives us the possibility to continuously compare the result to the temperature efficiency declared by the producer of the unit. The developed method demonstrated that the application of NTU method enables identifying sub-optimal performance of ventilation heat recovery, which would not have been revealed by direct comparison of temperature efficiencies. In some cases, low measured temperature efficiency was associated with problems not connected to the heat recovery heat exchanger. The method also enabled to estimate the additional heating costs due to the decreased heat recovery efficiency.

The use of carbon nanotube (CNT) and graphene structures as doped and decorated with La atom as an adsorbent and a sensor material for hydrogen molecules was investigated by the density functional theory method. It is seen that the hydrogen interaction increased significantly after the La modification on the CNT and graphene. The fact that the adsorption enthalpy values are smaller than the liquefaction enthalpy value of hydrogen indicates that they can be used as adsorbent materials for hydrogen adsorption. While the adsorption energy values are better in the modification with La doping in the CNT structure, the results in the graphene structure are better in the decoration with the La atom. Charge transfer has occurred between the structures modified with La and the hydrogen molecule. After the hydrogen interaction, HOMO–LUMO gap values decreased in La-modified CNT structures and increased in graphene structures. This signifies that the La-modified CNT structures could be electronic sensors for hydrogen molecules. Consequently, the CNT and graphene structures doped and decorated with La can be used as adsorbents for hydrogen molecules. In addition, La-modified structures have electronic sensor properties.
