Internet of Things is a new paradigm that is rapidly making progress in the present wireless communications. It semantically implies a worldwide network of connected objects, uniquely addressable based on standard communication protocols. IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low- Power and Lossy Network is considered as a core communication standard for IoT. Even though RPL offers a set of mechanism to make certain the safety of communication, the shared and open nature of IoT makes it evidently susceptible to numerous security attacks like Sinkhole attack, Wormhole attack, Hello flood attack, Sybil attack, Blackhole attack and etc. Wormhole attack is an internal attack which listens to the network activities without changing it, consequently making it extremely hard to identify the attack. Our paper targets to explore the current detection mechanism utilized as a part of identifying the wormhole attack in IoT based-networks. This paper classifies and exhibits every mechanism as per certain perspectives.

Intrusion Detection of Wormhole Attack in IoT: A Review

The flexibility and openness of mobile ad hoc networks MANETs make them attractive for various types of applications such as military communication, emergency search and rescue operations, disaster recovery, battlefields, communication between moving vehicles VANET etc. However, MANETs are highly susceptible to various security threats due to their inherent characteristics that can adversely affect their performance. In order to provide secure communication in mobile ad hoc networks, it is required to understand various possible attacks at different layers of the communication protocol stack. The intent of this paper is to provide structured and comprehensive study of prominent security attacks reported in the literature for mobile ad hoc networks. In addition, we also discuss various well-known reactive and proactive security solutions proposed in literature to prevent those attacks in MANETs. Finally, the paper is concluded with a brief discussion on future direction of research in MANETs.

Securing Mobile Ad Hoc Networks: Challenges and Solutions

A mobile ad hoc network or MANET are those wireless networks which posses no infrastructure which are connected by the wireless nodes. And these nodes are generally mobile and the connectionless links are used basically to connect these nodes and these nodes have the capability to self organize and self configure and self arrangement capability. They are not having uniform structure. Because of their mobility and their dynamic nature they are prone to many kinds of malicious attacks by the malicious users because in this every node acts as a sender receiver and the router so no node can be able to understand whether the data has been sent by the malicious sender or the true sender or the receiving node is the true node. Hence by this the data can be lost as well as can be dropped by the malicious user and it can send the fake data to the receiver as well. So there are actually many kinds of attacks at the network layer. MANETS are generally more prone to cyber attacks rather than the wired networks because of their mobile nature. So these attacks like wormhole attacks are a very big issue in the case of networks. As the demand of wireless networks is increasing day by day. So it is a big concern of about how to prevent these kinds of attacks. So that they may not affect the network layer further. So in this paper we are focusing upon these attacks and also about how by using hardware rather than software we can solve the wormhole attacks by using cryptography and the digital signature method.

Wormhole attacks in MANET

As MANETs use wireless medium for Communication, these are susceptible to many security attacks. In this paper a methodical review is done on the recent state of the research results on wormhole attacks. The simulated results helps to quantify the comparative performances of the different solutions proposed. The various detection techniques and the types of wormhole modes like In-band Channel, High Power Transmission etc. are studied.

A comprehensive review on detection of wormhole attack in MANET

One of the major harmful attacks in wireless sensor network is wormhole attack. These attacks are disturbing the routing in networks and create a large amount of traffics. Wormhole attacks are target to the banks, government, private sectors, public sectors etc. The proposed method is used to analyse and detect the wormhole attack. Using EIGRP protocol to identify the shortest path and detect the attacking node based on the round trip time variation technique. As compared with previous method, it is the easy way to detect the wormhole attacks.

Security is the one of the major issue that exists in Mobile Ad hoc network. Mobile Ad hoc network is infrastructure less network so it is vulnerable to several security attacks that are on different layers. Wormhole attack is one of the serious routing attack on network layer. This paper focuses on the wormhole attack, its classification and the modes by which they are launched. This paper summarizes various detection techniques proposed for wormhole attack and also present the effect of wormhole attack on various performance parameters.
