The development of versatile generalized strategies for easy surface modification is of immense scientific interest. Herein, a novel mechanism to form functional hydrogel coatings on a wide variety of substrate materials including polymers, polymeric resins, ceramics, and intermetallic compounds, enabling easy change of the surface wettability and lubrication property, is reported. In situ polymerization and hydrogel coating formation is initiated by free radicals generated through the redox reaction between Fe2+ and S2 O8 2- at the solid-liquid interface, which shows controllable growth kinetics. Hydrogel modification is fast, controllable, and performed in mild conditions at room temperature. The chemical components, thickness, and network structure of the hydrogel coating can be well controlled. The surface catalytically initiated radical polymerization method allows reinitiation of the polymerization when the grafted hydrogel coating is polished away, and allows continuous surface polymerization to form multi-interpenetrating network hydrogel coatings. Interestingly, it is fully compatible with 3D-printing technology, and by using 3D-printed composites as the catalytic template, it demonstrates an extreme advantage for engineering 3D hollow hydrogel objects with various complex structures. The versatility of this method makes it generate potential applications in the field of surface/interface and biological engineering.

Polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by K2S2O8–Fe(II) redox system

Vinyl polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by the Mn3+/ascorbic acid redox system was investigated in aqueous sulfuric acid in the temperature range of 30–45°C. The rate of polymerization Rp and the rate of Mn3+ ion disappearance were measured. The effect of additives like water -miscible organic solvents, neutral salts, complexing agents and different surfactants on the initial rate of polymerization were investigated. Depending on the results obtained, a suitable reaction mechanism is suggested which involves the formation of a complex between Mn3+ ion and the acid whose decomposition generates the initiating free radical, with the polymer chain being terminated by mutual combination of the growing chains.

Kinetics of the polymerization of acrylonitrile has been investigated in aqueous sulfuric acid in a temperature range of 25–45°C. The rate of polymerization (Rp) and the rate of managanic ion disappearance, etc., have been measured. The effect of the various additives, such as water-miscible organic solvents, neutral electrolytes, complexing agents, and surfactants, on the rate has been thoroughly studied. A mechanism that involves the initial complex formation between the thiol form of the thioamide and Mn3+, whose decomposition yields the initiating free radical with the polymer chain terminated by mutual combination of growing radicals, has been suggested.

Kinetics of polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by the Mn3+‐thioacetamide redox system

The polymerization of acrylonitrile was carried out using peroxydiphosphate-cyclohexanol redox system in the presence of silver ion. The rate of polymerization increases with increasing peroxydiphosphate concentration and the initiator exponent was computed to be 0.5. The rate of polymerization increases with increasing monomer concentration and the monomer exponent was computed to be unity. The plot of Rp vs [Ag+]1/2 was linear, indicating 0.5 order with respect to [Ag+]. The reaction was carried out at three different temperatures and the overall activation energy was calculated to be 7.60 kcal/mol. The effect of certain surfactants on the rate of polymerization has been investigated and a suitable kinetic scheme has been pictured.
