Fault location on series and shunt compensated lines using unsynchronized measurements

An optical sensor using the Pockels effect can be a useful measurement tool in electrical applications where mapping distributed E-fields is required. In this paper, results from E-field tests with a 2 m sphere and the voltage distribution of an 1100 kV cascaded test transformer are presented to demonstrate its utility. These results show that the optical sensor, owing to its inherent dielectric link to the data acquisition electronics can be employed as a research tool in the measurement of the voltage distribution on high voltage insulation systems.

The potential use of optical sensors for the measurement of electric field distribution

The device for measuring pulse energy includes integration means and provides a measure of high-intensity disturbances flowing on a cable. It is characterised in that it further includes a current-voltage converter (2) mounted on the cable (1), attenuation means (3, 4) coupling the said converter to the integration means (5, 6) and a logic processing and memory-storage assembly (12) coupled to the integration means and to an output display (20). Application: monitoring of lightning protection equipment.

Device for measuring pulse energy

The effect of voltage and energy ratings of ZnO protective systems of series capacitors on the transient stability and the transient torque phenomenon of a power system is investigated. Bonneville Power Administration's Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) is used for the studies. The stability studies are also carried out by a stability program and the results are compared with the EMTP results. The investigations show that the system switching strategy, the frequency of the inertial mode, and the systems susceptibility to SSR (subsynchronous resonance), are also important factors in proper determination of voltage and energy ratings of ZnO protective systems. As compared with the EMTP results, the stability program results are erroneous if the effect of ZnO protective systems of series capacitors is not considered in the analysis. Incision of capacitor-varistor linear models in a stability program results in optimistic stability margins. However, the results can be accepted with a fair degree of confidence. >

Transmission Line Fault Location Using Unsynchronized Measurements

The result of this development effort is the successful application of microprocessor and fiber optic technologies to the monitoring and protection of ZnO nonlinear bypass resistors. Two systems have been implemented and have undergone extensive fault testing. Both systems have operated correctly and have exhibited excellent noise and transient surpression. The developed monitoring and protection algorithm is unique, demonstrating the versatility of the microprocessor technology as applied to power system monitoring and protection problems. The fiber optic analog channel developed for this application is unique, exhibiting a high level of accuracy, and providing excellent electrical isolation between an active power system and sensitive digital systems.
