TL;DR: In this article, an alternative approach that seeks to describe friction by modelling the geometric surface roughness of the tools was proposed, using the ring test analytically a relationship has been established between surface geometry and the friction factor.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the role of 3D Finite Element Method (FEM), simulations and 2D approximations, fast simulation and pre-form design, workpiece properties, automated design of forged parts, and interface properties in the forging industry.
Abstract: This paper considers the structure and makeup of an EC Thematic Network whose overall objective has been to enhance the competitiveness of the European Community and Associated Member States. The paper examines the role of 3D Finite Element Method, (FEM), simulations and 2D approximations, fast simulation and pre-form design, work-piece properties, automated design of forged parts, and interface properties in the forging industry. It compares initial findings with a suggested focus for progression to maintain competitiveness and contribute further to socio-economic and research agendas.
