Summary The importance, characteristics, positive and negative impacts, and future role of weeds as an integral part of the natural and agroecosystems are evaluated and discussed. Interference between plants in nature and the importance of differentiating between competition and allelopathy are interpreted. Allelopathy as one component of weed/crop interference, allelochemicals from weed species and their possible mechanism of action are listed and discussed. Weed species with inhibitory action against cultivated crops, other weed species, and plant pathogens, as well as self-inhibitory (autopathic) species are reviewed. Stimulatory or inhibitory allelopathic effects of different crop plants, trapping and catching species, and the potential of allelopathic weeds in inhibiting or stimulating certain parasitic weed species are discussed and evaluated. Weed allelopathy, its ecological impacts and future prospects: a review

Following a definition of bitte mess and a mention of the Iink between the bitterness of peptides and their content of hydrophobie amino acid residues, a detailed description is given of the numerous factors Iikely to influence the development of bitter off-flavour defect in dairy products with emphasis on cheese. Factors such as milk quality, pH, psychrotrophic bacteria, fat and minerai content, the cheese manufacturing process including the cooking temperature, salt concentration and manner of draining the curd, the acidity or the pH of cheese, and sanitary processing and hygienic packaging conditions are less important than bacterial proliferation in the cheese vat and the type and amount of starter and rennet used. The major roles played by these last three factors are better understood since the development of the aseptic vat technique. Finally, possible ways are mentioned of keeping the concentration of bitter peptides below the threshold level for bitter taste detection.

Bitter flavour in dairy products. I. A review of the factors likely to influence its development, mainly in cheese manufacture

Most assessments of allelopathy involve bioassays. Our objective was to improve the sensitivity of an alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) seedling bioassay for evaluating genetic tolerance to autotoxic leaf extracts. In a petri dish assay on imbibed seed, light inhibited hypocotyl elongation of controls and increased root elongation. Root growth was sensitive to the autotoxin in both light and darkness. An agar medium gave better root growth of controls and lower standard errors than did filter paper when petri dishes were placed on edge to encourage downward root growth or were placed flat where roots grew laterally. Hypocotyl growth was not very sensitive to the autotoxic chemical(s) on either agar or paper medium when the plate was flat, because the hypocotyl arched upward to escape contact with the extract. Hypocotyl growth was sensitive in a rolled paper towel treatment held vertically because the hypocotyl remained in continuous contact with the extract. On agar plates placed flat, 50% inhibition of root length occurred at an extract concentration that was about 8% of that needed for 50% inhibition of germination at 36 and 48 h. Root growth was stimulated up to 15% above controls at very low concentrations of leaf extract. Root length at 120 h was the best indicator of autotoxic effects of alfalfa leaf extracts. We evaluated 17 germplasms and three cultivars of alfalfa for root growth response to the autotoxic chemical and found a twofold range (P < 0.05) in tolerance.

Effects of light, growth media, and seedling orientation on bioassays of alfalfa autotoxicity.

1. The allelopathic effect of the exudate secreted by Cistus ladanifer leaves was tested on different plant species. Cynodon dactylon and Rumex crispus, species absent from C. ladanifer scrub (jarales), were clearly inhibited by the exudate.



2. Species present in the jarales, Medicago polymorpha and Lolium rigidum, showed no direct inhibition of germination, but the process this was delayed, and cotyledon and root size was diminished. This implies inhibition of seedling growth, and may explain the low abundance of these species inside the jarales.



3. The active constituents in the inhibition of germination are low molecular weight phenolic compounds. The flavonoids appear to exert no direct effect on germination of the species tested, but do provoke a reduction in cotyledon and root size, and could thereby inhibit subsequent seedling development.

Allelopathic effect of Cistus ladanifer on seed germination

The allelopathic effects of wormwood plants (Artemisia princeps var.orientalis) and their possible phytotoxicity on receptor species were investigated. The aqueous extracts of mature leaf, stem, and root of wormwood plants caused significant inhibition in germination and decreased seedling elongation of receptor plants, whereas germination of some species was not inhibited by extracts of stems and roots. Dry weight growth was slightly increased at lower concentrations of the extract, whereas it was proportionally inhibited at higher concentrations. The calorie value of the organic matter in receptor plants measured by bomb calorimeter was reduced proportionally to the extract concentration. However, results with extracts of juvenile leaf did not correlate with inhibition or promotion of elongation and dry weight.

Allelopathic effects of water extracts ofArtemisia princeps var.orientalis on selected plant species.

Research was conducted to determine the poten- tial for allelopathy to occur in pastures infested with bitter sneezeweed. Aqueous extracts of bitter sneezeweed leaves reduced alfalfa and Italian ryegrass seedling growth as much as 50% at concentrations of 0.5% (w/v). Leaf extracts were more phytotoxic than either stem or root extracts and seedling growth was reduced more than seed germination. Bitter sneezeweed tissue mixed in potting soil at concentrations as low as 0.3% w/w reduced alfalfa seedling numbers by 43%, plant height by 26%, and foliage dry matter production by 54% compared to plants cultured in soil without bitter sneezeweed leaf tissue. The potential concentration of bitter sneezeweed leaf material in soil in the pasture ecosystem was determined to be 0.5% w/v in the liquid phase and 0.2% w/w in the solid phase. Alfalfa seedling growth was reduced by 70% when germinating seed were placed under a bell jar with a potted mature bitter sneezeweed plant compared to control seedlings. A potential exists for bitter sneezeweed interference with developing alfalfa and Italian ryegrass seedlings following fall interseeding into pastures infested with bitter sneezeweed.
