Condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of planetary gearboxes: A review

This article presents an overview of the acoustics of friction by covering friction sounds, friction-induced vibrations and waves in solids, and descriptions of other frictional phenomena related to acoustics. Friction, resulting from the sliding contact of solids, often gives rise to diverse forms of waves and oscillations within solids which frequently lead to radiation of sound to the surrounding media. Among the many everyday examples of friction sounds, violin music and brake noise in automobiles represent the two extremes in terms of the sounds they produce and the mechanisms by which they are generated. Of the multiple examples of friction sounds in nature, insect sounds are prominent. Friction also provides a means by which energy dissipation takes place at the interface of solids. Friction damping that develops between surfaces, such as joints and connections, in some cases requires only microscopic motion to dissipate energy. Modeling of friction-induced vibrations and friction damping in mechanical systems requires an accurate description of friction for which only approximations exist. While many of the components that contribute to friction can be modeled, computational requirements become prohibitive for their contemporaneous calculation. Furthermore, quantification of friction at the atomic scale still remains elusive. At the atomic scale, friction becomes a mechanism that converts the kinetic energy associated with the relative motion of surfaces to thermal energy. However, the description of the conversion to thermal energy represented by a disordered state of oscillations of atoms in a solid is still not well understood. At the macroscopic level, friction interacts with the vibrations and waves that it causes. Such interaction sets up a feedback between the friction force and waves at the surfaces, thereby making friction and surface motion interdependent. Such interdependence forms the basis for friction-induced motion as in the case of ultrasonic motors and other examples. Last, when considered phenomenologically, friction and boundary layer turbulence exhibit analogous properties and, when compared, each may provide clues to a better understanding of the other.

Acoustics of friction.

This paper introduces an on-line particle-filtering (PF)-based framework for fault diagnosis and failure prognosis in non-linear, non-Gaussian systems. This framework considers the implementation of two autonomous modules. A fault detection and identification (FDI) module uses a hybrid state-space model of the plant and a PF algorithm to estimate the state probability density function (pdf) of the system and calculates the probability of a fault condition in realtime. Once the anomalous condition is detected, the available state pdf estimates are used as initial conditions in prognostic routines. The failure prognostic module, on the other hand, predicts the evolution in time of the fault indicator and computes the pdf of the remaining useful life (RUL) of the faulty subsystem, using a non-linear state-space model (with unknown time-varying parameters) and a PF algorithm that updates the current state estimate. The outcome of the prognosis module provides information about the precision and accuracy of long-term predictions, RUL expectations and 95% confidence intervals for the condition under study. Data from a seeded fault test for a UH-60 planetary gear plate are used to validate the proposed approach.

Multi-Harmonic Analysis of Dry Friction Damped Systems Using an Incremental Harmonic Balance Method

This paper surveys the literature on the use of dry friction in passive damping and vibration isolation. Several analytical techniques are presented followed by applications from various areas. Despite difficulties in the analytical and experimental treatment of friction damped systems, numerous studies have endeavored to predict, measure, and/or enhance the energy dissipation and vibration isolation properties of dry friction in order to improve system performance. Undoubtedly, friction damping will continue to play an important role in many mechanical and structural systems.

Application of output feedback to variable structure systems

On the Equivalence of the Incremental Harmonic Balance Method and the Harmonic Balance-Newton Raphson Method

Friction is a difficult phenomenon to model and simulate. One promising friction model is the LuGre model, which captures key frictional behavior from experiments and from other friction laws. While displaying many modeling advantages, the LuGre model of friction can result in numerically stiff system dynamics. In particular, the LuGre friction model exhibits very slow dynamics during periods of sticking and very fast dynamics during periods of slip. This paper investigates the best simulation strategies for application to dynamic systems with LuGre friction. Several simulation strategies are applied including the explicit Runge-Kutta, implicit Trapezoidal, and implicit Radau-IIA schemes. It was found that both the Runge-Kutta and Radau-IIA methods performed well in simulating the system. The Runge-Kutta method had better accuracy, but the Radau-IIA method required less integration steps.Copyright © 2005 by ASME
