The Irpinia (Italy) 1980 earthquake: Detailed analysis of a complex normal faulting

TL;DR: A detailed analysis of near-source strong motion and leveling data, together with the results of teleseismic waveform modeling by Westaway and Jackson (1987) and aftershock studies by Deschamps and King (1984), allows a satisfactory kinematic description of the complex normal faulting associated with the magnitude 6.9 Irpinia earthquake as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI

Seismic reflections reveal a massive melt layer feeding Campi Flegrei caldera

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the deep structure of Campi Flegrei volcano and showed that seismic wave amplitude variations with distance from the radiating source provide clear evidence for large amplitude seismic reflections from the top of an extended supercritical fluid-bearing rock formation at about 3,000 m and associated with a mid-crust, partial melting zone beneath the caldera.
Journal ArticleDOI

Earthquake magnitude estimation from peak amplitudes of very early seismic signals on strong motion records

TL;DR: Zollo et al. as mentioned in this paper show that the low-pass filtered, peak amplitudes of initial P- and S-wave seismic signals recorded in the vicinity of an occurring earthquake source correlate with the earthquake magnitude and may be used for real-time estimation of the event size in seismic early warning applications.
Journal ArticleDOI

Seismic Evidence of an Extended Magmatic Sill Under Mt. Vesuvius

TL;DR: Evidence of an extended sill with magma interspersed in a solid matrix at about 8-kilometer depth is found in Mt. Vesuvius to better define its magmatic system.
Journal ArticleDOI

Earthquake early warning: Concepts, methods and physical grounds

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a framework for earthquake early warning (EEW) systems, which can reduce deaths, injuries, and economic losses, as well as speed up rescue response and damage recovery.
