This study aimed to examine relations between social support, job stress, and public service motivation (PSM), also assessed how social support and job stress affect PSM in China based on the job demands-resources (JD-R) theory. The survey investigated a sample of 973 healthcare workers employed in public hospitals in Beijing, Xiamen, and Guangzhou in 2017 (including doctors, nurses, medical technicians, and administrators). Correlation analysis and Structural equation modeling (SEM) were used. Challenge stress and hindrance stress were directly negatively associated with PSM. Supervisor support was significantly positively associated with PSM, and the path from coworker support to PSM was significant. Supervisor support was significantly negatively associated with hindrance stress, and coworker support was significantly negatively associated with challenge stress. Hindrance stress and challenge stress significantly mediated the relations between supervisor support and PSM, and between coworker support and PSM respectively. PSM might be raised by increasing supervisor support and coworker support and by limiting hindrance stress and challenge stress. Our study suggests that administrators of public hospitals should be mindful of the intense job stress of healthcare workers and undertake interventions targeting challenge stress and hindrance stress. Also, public hospital administrators should encourage and assist supervisors in their leadership functions. Besides, administrators of public hospitals should emphasize coworker support and good employee relationships.

How does social support affect public service motivation of healthcare workers in China: the mediating effect of job stress

The COVID-19 pandemic is a current emergency worldwide. All the consequent changes in sanitary systems have negatively affected the work–life balance. In particular, healthcare workers suffered from anxiety, stress, and depression, mostly nurses compared to physicians. To handle this situation, the adoption of different coping strategies has played a strategic role in psychophysical wellbeing. Our main goal is to the assess the perception of work environment and wellbeing (EQ-5D questionnaire), as well as to analyze possible differences in coping styles between physicians and nurses (brief COPE questionnaire). The arising differences were compared between the two groups, and associations with variables were assessed through a bivariate correlation analysis. This cross-sectional study was conducted from November to December 2020 through an online survey. A total of 172 respondents (117 physicians and 55 nurses), of which 102 were women and 70 were men, accepted to join the study. Our results showed that physicians referred a higher perception of wellbeing, and nurses reported an increased perception of work activity and efficiency, along with an unchanged economic status. The most frequently adopted coping strategies were Active and Planning (self-sufficient coping). Physicians showed a greater tendency to use avoidant coping strategies. More-experienced nurses and physicians were less prone to adopt socially supported coping strategies, emphasizing the need for novel organizational measures at the social dimension that favored sharing and interaction between peers. Future research should aim to further investigate the relationship between the perception of work environment and coping strategies in order to identify risk factors to be prevented by promoting adequate measures at an organizational level.

Factors Affecting Perceived Work Environment, Wellbeing, and Coping Styles: A Comparison between Physicians and Nurses during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Nurses constitute a professional group exposed to a high risk of stress and occupational burnout. Fewer nurses are recruited every year and the ever higher age of those professionally active is alarming. This article presents the results of international comparative studies from 2018 and 2019 involving Polish and German nurses (747 people) dedicated to the perception of aspects of nurses’ work in terms of the risk of excessive stress and burnout and possible preventive measures. Using a proprietary questionnaire, the authors evaluated differences in the perception of the nursing profession in Poland and Germany, as well as in terms of seniority or decision-making. Next, the relationship between the perception of work specificity and opinions about professional risks and possible preventive measures was evaluated. The analysis used the Mann-Whitney U test and correlation analysis of the questions. Using exploratory factor analysis, the number of dimensions describing the nursing profession was reduced from 16 to four related to (1) workload, (2) job satisfaction, (3) atmosphere in the organisation and (4) sense of control over one’s own work. The results showed statistically significant differences in the perception of professional specificity and risks according to the analysed characteristics.

The Perception of Occupation by Hospital Nurses in Poland and Germany in Terms of the Risk of Excessive Stress and Burnout as Well as Possible Coping and Preventive Solutions

BACKGROUND
Midwives are potentially exposed to high levels of occupational stress. The level of stress may be related to the job demands and job resources, as well as midwife seniority. To date, few studies on the determinants of occupational stress have examined Polish midwives.


OBJECTIVE
This study aims to investigate the roles of workload, job satisfaction, and seniority in shaping the stress levels of midwives in Poland.


METHODS
A cross-sectional approach and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used to compare two groups: newly qualified midwives (NQMs; n = 79) and experienced midwives (n = 99). All data were collected between January and November 2018.


RESULTS
Analysis revealed that in both NQMs (β= 0.34, p = 0.006) and experienced midwives (β= 0.40, p < 0.001) workload was a positive predictor of occupational stress. In contrast, job satisfaction was found to be a negative predictor of stress in both groups (NQMs: β= -0.44, p < 0.001; experienced midwives: β= -0.57, p < 0.001). The study groups did not differ significantly in terms of the levels of workload, job satisfaction, and occupational stress.


CONCLUSION
Workload and job satisfaction are predictors of occupational stress in Polish midwives. The results of this study indicate the important role of job satisfaction and workload in the shaping of occupational stress levels. Resource-rich and low-stress work environments can enhance the quality of health care provided by midwives.

El Burnout es un estado de agotamiento emocional, despersonalización y baja satisfacción personal que ocurre cuando una persona experimenta una carga de trabajo crónicamente excesiva o estrés laboral, que se vio acrecentado debido a la adaptación del teletrabajo en las instituciones de educación superior, en la cual, los profesores emplearon nuevos métodos para adaptarse a la nueva metodología de educación, lo que trajo consigo estrés, ansiedad y varios factores que influyen en la conducta laboral de cada integrante de la comunidad universitaria. Metodologia: Se empleo la investigación cuantitativa debido a que se utilizaron cantidades numéricas obtenidas por medio de una encuesta, para ello, se empleó una muestra de 5091 personas conformadas por el personal de la Universidad Técnica de Ambato, Universidad de los Andes (Uniandes) y la Universidad tecnología Indoamérica, además se realizó una revisión bibliográfica por repositorios digitales como Publimed, Scopus, Redalyc etc.,  para ordenar todos los temas que intervienen dentro de esta investigación. Resultados: el 45% de la muestra encuestada considera que debido la pandemia se incrementaron las jornadas de trabajo, además, el 41% de la muestra considera que el origen del Burnout se debe al insuficiente apoyo emocional proporcionados por el departamento de recursos humanos de las Instituciones de Educación superior. Conclusiones: la cultura Organizacional las estrategias para combatir el burnout deben centrarse en prestar apoyo emocional, reducción de las actividades laborales y sobre todo proporcionar medidas administrativas para manejar el estrés y la carga laboral.

El Burnout Post Pandemia COVID-19 en el Desempeño Laboral de las Instituciones de Educación Superior

Aim The aim of the study is to assess the differences in the professional quality of life between nurses, midwives and doctors. Design Cross-sectional study. Methods A total of 297 participants were surveyed: 165 nurses, 101 doctors and 31 midwives. We used ProQol questionnaire with three subscales (compassion satisfaction -CS, burnout- B, compassion fatigue-CF and own questionnaire (social-demographics data). Results Burnout and CF were average in a group of nurse and midwives, low in group of doctors. In group of nurses, a relationship was observed between compassion satisfaction and: job seniority (p < .01), basic place of work (p < .01), self-assessment of work situation (p < .01), as well as between burnout and: job seniority (p < .05), form of employment (p = .03), basic place of work (p = .002), self-assessment of work situation (p < .01). In group of midwives was only the relationship between the self-assessment of work situation and: CS (p < .01) and burnout (p < .01) were shown.
