The rise of big data on cloud computing

Fog/edge computing has been proposed to be integrated with Internet of Things (IoT) to enable computing services devices deployed at network edge, aiming to improve the user’s experience and resilience of the services in case of failures. With the advantage of distributed architecture and close to end-users, fog/edge computing can provide faster response and greater quality of service for IoT applications. Thus, fog/edge computing-based IoT becomes future infrastructure on IoT development. To develop fog/edge computing-based IoT infrastructure, the architecture, enabling techniques, and issues related to IoT should be investigated first, and then the integration of fog/edge computing and IoT should be explored. To this end, this paper conducts a comprehensive overview of IoT with respect to system architecture, enabling technologies, security and privacy issues, and present the integration of fog/edge computing and IoT, and applications. Particularly, this paper first explores the relationship between cyber-physical systems and IoT, both of which play important roles in realizing an intelligent cyber-physical world. Then, existing architectures, enabling technologies, and security and privacy issues in IoT are presented to enhance the understanding of the state of the art IoT development. To investigate the fog/edge computing-based IoT, this paper also investigate the relationship between IoT and fog/edge computing, and discuss issues in fog/edge computing-based IoT. Finally, several applications, including the smart grid, smart transportation, and smart cities, are presented to demonstrate how fog/edge computing-based IoT to be implemented in real-world applications.

A systematic literature review of blockchain-based applications: Current status, classification and open issues

The seismic risk assessment of spatially distributed infrastructures is gaining increasing research attention. Data communication networks, although less investigated than other infrastructures, have large importance for the immediate post-event emergency management and community resilience. In this study the framework of simulationbased probabilistic seismic risk analysis of data communication infrastructures is applied to a real case study; i.e., the interuniversity data network of the Campania region (southern Italy). The network is constituted by point-like facilities, that is, racks located within buildings and containing the devices routing and managing traffic, and distributed links, that is, buried fiber-optic cables. The network performance was assessed following the performance-based earthquake engineering framework extended to spatially distributed systems. The seismological, geological and geotechnical features of the region were characterized together with the seismic vulnerability of each element of the network. Moreover, to overcome the absence of available fragilities for buried fiber-optic cables, and as a difference with respect to previous work of the authors on the topic, the fragilities recently developed for buried electrical cables are adapted. The network performance is quantified in terms of traffic lost, that is the difference between traffic transferred through the network before and after the seismic event. Results indicate a relatively low level of losses when the network’s region is hit by an earthquake and, according to the adopted models, a low influence of cables fragility on the performance of the network.

The use of robots in the modern world is widespread, not only in medicine and automated vehicles, but also in national security, defense, and industry. Together with the growing number of robots there is also an increase of cyber attacks against robots and in general of their security issues. Thus, we consider cyber security and related issues such as robots vulnerabilities from different perspectives that need to be investigated in order to understand strengths and weaknesses of robots. The aim of this paper is to cover the topic of cyber security in robots in a more focused and comprehensive way with respect to what has been done previously in literature. Throughout our comprehensive survey, we discuss also different aspects related to threats, attacks, and available methods for preventing malicious behavior from robots. As a result of our investigation, it has been found that robots' data, software, network, and hardware are the most vulnerable components. During this review, eventually current approaches to protect robots are discussed in order to maintain their integrity, availability, and confidentiality. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the likelihood of cyber security risks on robotic platforms can be significantly reduced through improvements in encryption, authorization/authentication, and physical security. Security level of different robotic systems is analyzed in different fields so as to determine whether the security needs to be upgraded or rectified. We also present and describe open challenges that can arise in the next few years. This paper aims at being a starting point for researchers and practitioners to understand and upgrade the cyber security of robots.

Internet of Things is a widespread technology that comprises several networking solutions for connecting things to the rest of the Internet. Understanding the characteristics of such solutions is fundamental in order to satisfy the diverse requirements of all the possible applications. The goal of this paper is to empirically evaluate and compare the performance of the most spread technologies for IoT low-power long-range communications. The parameters considered are the energy efficiency, the message losses, and the latency of a message. Obtained results show that up to 2% of messages can be lost when using LoRaWAN, but the latency is always smaller than 7 seconds. NB-IoT shows slightly larger latency values and more delivered messages than LoRaWAN. The messages sent using Sigfox are always correctly delivered, but the communication introduces delays up to 100 seconds. These results are of great importance for all the players in the IoT scenario interested in LPWAN technologies. The results of this study show how different communication technologies provide significantly different performance.
