An adsorbent structure including a honeycomb structure having a periphery and two ends, the honeycomb structure having a plurality of passages which are defined by partition walls and extend in an axial direction between the ends, and a composition including zeolite coated on the partition walls. The zeolite may be a high-silica zeolite having a Si/Al ratio of not less than 40. The composition may include a mixture of zeolite and heat-resistant oxide loaded with a noble metal, and the zeolite may also be loaded with a noble metal. Further, the composition may include two layers, a first layer comprising zeolite, and a second layer comprising a heat-resistant oxide loaded with a noble metal. The first layer comprising zeolite may be loaded with a noble metal.

Heater and catalytic converter

There is provided an improved electrically heated accordion folded corrugated thin metal catalytic converter for hydrocarbon or alcohol fueled engine exhaust, particularly internal combustion engine exhaust, having a simplified construction and characterized in that the entire corrugated thin metal monolith, or monoliths, serves as a resistance heater to bring the catalyst up to optimum operating temperature quickly and thereby reduce the escape of pollutants into the atmosphere upon start-up, and which does not depend upon conduction as a mdoe of heat transfer to achieve such temperature.

A resistance adjusting type heater including a honeycomb structure having a large number of passages, at last two electrodes for energizing the honeycomb structure, and a resistance adjusting mechanism such as a slit provided between the electrodes to heat the gas flowing through the passages formed in the honeycomb structure. A catalytic converter includes a main monolith catalyst and the above-described heater placed adjacent to and upstream of the main monolith catalyst. A catalytic converter includes a honeycomb structure having a large number of passages, a catalyst carried on the honeycomb structure, at least two electrodes for energizing the honeycomb structure, and a resistance adjusting mechanism provided between the electrode. A catalytic converter includes a main monolith catalyst, and a heater placed adjacent to and upstream of the main monolith catalyst. The heater includes a honeycomb structure having a large number of passages, a catalyst carried on the honeycomb structure, at least two electrodes for energizing the honeycomb structure, and a resistance adjusting mechanism provided between the electrodes.

Resistance adjusting type heater and catalytic converter

There is provided an improved electrically heatable core for an electrically heatable catalytic converter. The core is characterized by a plurality of corrugated thin metal strips secured to an electrically conductive central core or tube. Alternating with the corrugated thin metal strips are narrow strips of brazing metal in an axially staggered pattern. These strips are spirally wound and fused to braze them together in a unified monolith. A retainer shell is supplied to hold the monolith together. The core is placed in a housing fitted with insulated means for conducting electric current to the monolith to effect heating. The housing is then inserted in an exhaust line where it is effective to control start-up pollution, and where the monolith is constrained against telescoping.

Structure for electrically heatable catalytic core

A corrugated stainless steel sheet and a flat stainless steel sheet are sandwiched together and wound spirally so the corrugations form a plurality of small gas flow passages connecting the converter inlet with the converter outlet. Alumina coatings on the sheets electrically insulate the sheets from each other and a finely divided catalyst is distributed on the alumina coatings. Electrical energy flows through the sheets to heat the catalyst to operating temperature.
