Abstract: After the discovery of the Rhizobium Nod factors (Lerouge et al. 1990), it has become clear that these signal molecules of Rhizobium play a pivotal role in different steps of nodule formation. It has been shown that these factors are sufficient to induce root hair deformation (Lerouge et al. 1990; Spaink et al. 1991), cortical cell division (Truchet et al. 1991; Spaink et al. 1991) and also infection related processes are induced. The latter is demonstrated by the formation of pre-infection threads (Van Brussel et al. 1992) and the induction of the infection related early nodulin genes, PsENOD5 and PsENOD12 (Scheres et al. 1990), by purified Nod factors (Horvath et al., unpublished).
