A simple inertial formulation of the shallow water equations for efficient two-dimensional flood inundation modelling.

[1] Current global river routing models do not represent floodplain inundation dynamics realistically because the storage and movement of surface waters are regulated by small-scale topography rather than the commonly used spatial resolution of global models. In this study, we propose a new global river routing model, CaMa-Flood, which explicitly parameterizes the subgrid-scale topography of a floodplain, thus describing floodplain inundation dynamics. The relationship between water storage, water level, and flooded area in the model is decided on the basis of the subgrid-scale topographic parameters based on 1 km resolution digital elevation model. Horizontal water transport is calculated with a diffusive wave equation, which realizes the backwater effect in flat river basins. A set of global-scale river flow simulations demonstrated an improved predictability of daily-scale river discharge in many major world rivers by incorporating the floodplain inundation dynamics. Detailed analysis of the simulated results for the Amazon River suggested that introduction of the diffusive wave equation is essential for simulating water surface elevation realistically. The simulated spatiotemporal variation of the flooded area in the Amazon basin showed a good correlation with satellite observations, especially when the backwater effect was considered. The improved predictability for daily river discharge, water surface elevation, and inundated areas by the proposed model will promote climate system studies and water resource assessments.

A mathematical model is proposed for the movement of water and sediments in Coral Creek. a tidal creek surrounded by thickly vegetated mangrove wamps in Missionary Bay at the northern end of Hinchinbrook Island, northern Queensland. It is shown that a net down-stream longitudinal current through mangrove swamps exists and is responsible for rapidly carrying away organic detritus (e.g. fallen tree leaves) to the ocean, thereby enhancing the export of nutrients from mangrove swamps. The asymmetry between ebb and flood currents contributes to the maintenance of a deep self-sustaining drainage channel. even in the presence of a large sediment input from surrounding coastal waters. The size and geometry of the drainage channel are related to vegetation density in mangrove swamps. Evapotranspiration from mangroves in Coral Creek is responsible for the existence of a longitudinal salinity gradient. The evapotranspiration rate could be as large as 3 cm,'day. Residual currents are clockwise in Missionary Bay and explain the overall patterns of scour and deposition in the bay.

Hydrodynamics of a tidal creek-mangrove swamp system.

It has been proposed to control the flood which periodically inundates 50,000 sq km in the Lower Basin of the Mekong River in Cambodia and South Vietnam by means of a barrage across the Tonle Sap. This would transform the Great Lake of Cambodia into a 72 billion cu m reservoir. The used model consist of a system of ordinary first-order differential equations each representing water level as a function of thime in one of the some 300 meshes into which the whole area can be divided. Exchange relations between cells are based either on Saint Venant’s dynamic equations or on the weir type exchange laws, inertia terms being ignored in both cases due to the very small velocity of flood propagation. Boundary conditions are represented by about 50 additional imaginary cells. A flood lasting 3.5 months corresponds to about 120 computation cycles with a time increment varying between 6 hrs. and 48 hrs. It requires about 1 hr of computer time. Printout is done by means of the IBM 1401.
