The greater power of bad events over good ones is found in everyday events, major life events (e.g., trauma), close relationship outcomes, social network patterns, interpersonal interactions, and learning processes. Bad emotions, bad parents, and bad feedback have more impact than good ones, and bad information is processed more thoroughly than good. The self is more motivated to avoid bad self-definitions than to pursue good ones. Bad impressions and bad stereotypes are quicker to form and more resistant to disconfirmation than good ones. Various explanations such as diagnosticity and salience help explain some findings, but the greater power of bad events is still found when such variables are controlled. Hardly any exceptions (indicating greater power of good) can be found. Taken together, these findings suggest that bad is stronger than good, as a general principle across a broad range of psychological phenomena.

1 This chapter shows application of a consistent set of clear physical principles to describe the beginnings of the universe by the (hot) Big Bang model. The ultimate beginning presents difficulties for the physicist, particularly when it comes to explaining why we find a very inhomogeneous cosmos, instead of a uniform, radiating gas. Stars, globular clusters, galaxies, and clusters of galaxies dot space, but we cannot at present explain their presence without invoking a "deus ex machina." We expect ultimately to rationalize the existence of these local inhomogeneities through gravitational contractions of regions of higher than average mass density that in tum arise out of fluctuations, but the case cannot yet be made completely. Meanwhile, the Big Bang (incomplete) model deals with cosmic evolution in the large, as a balance between gravitational attraction and cosmic expansion. Its relationships are described by two simple equations derived from Einstein's theory of general relativity via local conservations of mass-energy and of momentum. Unfortunately, this model does not by itself produce the observed inhomogeneities. Neither the assumption of thermodynamic fluctuations following a "smooth" beginning nor that ofa chaotic beginning can itself account for stars and galaxies. A mystery remains. -THE EDITOR This chapter describes the efforts of cosmologists (and nature?) to form galactic and stellar structures, comments on them from the viewpoint of the homeokinetic principles (Soodak and Iberall, 1978) discussed elsewhere in this volume, and pursues some parallels in the origin of life. It appears that there are no serious problems in understanding the origin of stars, given the previous formation of a galactic gas mass. A number of reasonable, even likely, paths lead to star formation. On the other hand, the origin of inhomogeneities required to initiate galaxy formation is not yet known. Higher-order factors of the Big Five predict conformity: Are there neuroses of health?

Several theories claim that dreaming is a random by-product of REM sleep physiology and that it does not serve any natural function. Phenomenal dream content, however, is not as disorganized as such views imply. The form and content of dreams is not random but organized and selective: during dreaming, the brain constructs a complex model of the world in which certain types of elements, when compared to waking life, are underrepresented whereas others are over represented. Furthermore, dream content is consistently and powerfully modulated by certain types of waking experiences. On the basis of this evidence, I put forward the hypothesis that the biological function of dreaming is to simulate threatening events, and to rehearse threat perception and threat avoidance. To evaluate this hypothesis, we need to consider the original evolutionary context of dreaming and the possible traces it has left in the dream content of the present human population. In the ancestral environment human life was short and full of threats. Any behavioral advantage in dealing with highly dangerous events would have increased the probability of reproductive success. A dream-production mechanism that tends to select threatening waking events and simulate them over and over again in various combinations would have been valuable for the development and maintenance of threat-avoidance skills. Empirical evidence from normative dream content, children's dreams, recurrent dreams, nightmares, post traumatic dreams, and the dreams of hunter-gatherers indicates that our dream-production mechanisms are in fact specialized in the simulation of threatening events, and thus provides support to the threat simulation hypothesis of the function of dreaming.

The ancient Indian Sanskrit tradition produced no text more intriguing, or more persistently misunderstood or underappreciated, than the Mahabharata. Its intricacies have waylaid generations of scholars and ignited dozens of unresolved debates. In this text, Alf Hiltebeitel offers a unique model for understanding the great epic. Employing a range of literary and narrative theories, he draws on historical and comparative research in an attempt to discern the spirit and techniques behind the epic's composition. The author focuses on the education of Yudhisthira, also known as the Dharma King, and shows how the relationship of this figure to others - especially his author-grandfather Vyasa and his wife Draupadi - provides a thread through the bewildering array of frames and stories embedded within stories.
