A critical review on the use of nanoparticles in liquid–liquid extraction

This article concerns the influence of different ZnO nanoparticle concentrations (0.001, 0.003, 0.005 and 0.01 wt%) along with operating parameters (i.e., pulsation intensity and flow rate of dispersed and continuous phases) and physical properties on mean drop size and drop size distribution in a horizontal pulsed perforated-plate extraction column for the toluene–acetone–water and butyl acetate–acetone–water systems (mass transfer direction from the dispersed phase to the continuous phase). According to the results, it is observed that the addition of nanoparticles has a remarkable influence on breakage and coalescence of drops and consequently their size distribution. Accordingly, adding nanoparticles reduces the interfacial tension due to internal turbulence caused by nanoparticles’ Brownian motion inside each drop. It is found that drop size distribution will shift to the left and the density of small droplets will increase in the presence of ZnO nanoparticles in the column. Furthermore, new correlation is proposed to predict mean drop size in terms of operating parameters, physical properties and nanoparticle concentration. It is also found that the maximum entropy principle is suitable to predict drop size distribution in a horizontal extraction column.

In this experimental study, the presence effect of Aniline surfactant on mean drop size, D 32 , was investigated in a horizontal mixer-settler For this purpose, two series of experiments were conducted in a single stage mixer-settler on the liquid–liquid dispersion of a toluene–water system At first, the effects of the impeller speed and the holdup on the drop size distribution were examined without Aniline Afterwards the same investigation was performed in the presence of Aniline For both experimental series, a new modified correlation for D 32 was presented The results revealed that D 32 , in the absence of Aniline, depended on the impeller speed with a power low function, having an exponent of −1208 and being in agreement with the Hinze-Kolmogorov's theory In the presence of Aniline, a greater reduction in D 32 was observed when the impeller speed increased Moreover, the increasing rate of D 32 diminished with the increase in the holdup

The effects of a surfactant on mean drop size in a mixer-settler extractor

The effects of holdup on Sauter mean drop diameter, D32, and dispersed phase mass transfer coefficient have been studied in the spray and packed extraction columns. For both columns, two well-defined regions for the dependence of D32 on holdup were observed. D32 increased and decreased with an increase in holdup at low and high levels of holdup, respectively. Changes in dispersed phase mass transfer coefficient against holdup were shown to be similar to D32 for both columns. Moreover, empirical correlations have been derived to predict D32 and dispersed phase mass transfer coefficient for both columns. It has been shown that the derived correlations are in a good agreement with the experimental data. © 2013 Curtin University of Technology and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Spray and packed liquid–liquid extraction columns: drop size and dispersed phase mass transfer

Liquid-liquid extraction is a unit operation that is largely employed by process industries for separation purposes.1 The liquid–liquid extraction columns are known as useful multiphase contacting equipment that received a wide industrial application in various fields of engineering such as hydrometallurgical, nuclear, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and food industries.2–4 Knowledge of predicting column drop size plays an important role in the processes of performance prediction and designing of spray column.5–7 Large number of relatively stationary small drops will decrease the column capacity. Larger drops will have larger volume, low surface area per unit volume and higher slip velocity leading to the fact that the column height must be increased to achieve proper extraction efficiencies for such drops.8–10 A large amount of work can be found in literature dedicated to the prediction of drop size distribution in liquid-liquid dispersions in extraction columns, but most of them are valid only for specific conditions of those studies.11–16 Furthermore, maximum Sauter mean diameter, d32max, has not been investigated yet in liquid-liquid extraction researches and hence, further research is needed in order to recognize this important parameter of every liquid-liquid emulsion system. Another parameter which has great effect on the mass transfer coefficient in liquid-liquid emulsion systems is the terminal velocity.17–19 Based on the study of the movement of a single drop of various sizes, Grace built his equation of terminal velocity.
