Science and practice highlight the relevance of employing sustainability practices in consumption and production. A sustainable change requires the participation of society as well as companies and organizations. In addition, companies have to rethink their classical businesses and consider innovations for acting in an ecological, economic, and social way by enhancing and adapting their business models. Business models can be described in different ways such as textual (e. g. business plans) or in graphical frameworks (e. g. Business Model Canvas). Frameworks support the designing of business models and should provide the consideration of sustainability. This paper aims to answer how sustainability is represented in existing approaches for modelling business models. Therefore, we conduct a literature review including different databases, proceedings, and journals. We identify and categorise a total of 42 articles. As a first result of the synthesis, we determine a literature-based typology of extensions, adjustments and design principles for sustainable business models. In addition, we suggest a research agenda which (a) discusses further enhancements to design sustainable business models regarding modelling techniques, sustainability assessments and detail models as well as (b) highlights the importance of evaluating these approaches by recommending evaluation settings.

The purpose of this paper is to determine the status quo of research on applications of information and communication technology (ICT) in green logistics (GL) and offer recommendations for future research. We determine that research about political interaction is needed to design new standards and regulations for GL. We also recommend that this work be extended by behavioural research to both identify factors that influence society’s sustainable behaviour and determine whether the current digitisation of society leads to more sustainable transport. In addition, this paper provides an overview of types of software applications that may be beneficial to GL. These benefits usually relate to the strategic management of freight transport and supply chains and the provision of software for executing or monitoring passenger transport. As such, further research on sustainability measures is also needed to identify important sustainable indicators in transport. Existing reviews mostly concentrate on either a specific logistics area or supply chain management; as far as we are aware, no studies focus on the use of ICT in GL at a superordinate level. This paper’s holistic evaluation of the state of research in this underexplored area and its propositions for future research help to fill this gap in the literature.

Information and communication technology in green logistics: status quo and research gaps

The research on information systems (IS) and environmental sustainability has grown under the notion of green IS. Hence, it is important to comprehend the concept of green IS and to ascertain existing frameworks for designing it. This paper presents the definition and taxonomy of green IS, areas of green IS research currently being addressed by IS academics and research directions for future studies on green IS design framework. This paper follows systematic literature review (SLR) procedures with snowballing approach as the main method. Relevant articles were mainly selected by referring to the Association of Information Systems (AIS) and thus, are relevant to the IS academic community. This paper synthesized the six elements for green IS design framework namely context, goals, roles, design principles, functions and features. This provides a foundation for the future green IS design framework. The evidence indicates that there is absence of metrics in measuring green IS design, which is valuable in assessing such systems.

Green information systems design framework: a systematic literature review

Environmental pollution and climate change are critical global challenges of our time. Electric vehicles can tackle these problems by contributing to a sustainable mobility solution and a better environment, in particular in urban areas. Despite their benefits, the diffusion of electric vehicles is still low. This study reports on what information Green Information Systems should provide to the individual users of electric vehicles. Using data obtained from a national survey in China, we identified four different user groups through a cluster analysis based on technology and environmental issues. Considering their particular characteristics, we show how information systems can specifically address the interests of each of the user groups. Our findings provide a foundation for the future design of information systems for electric vehicles in order to improve user acceptance and behavior towards environmental sustainability.
