This paper investigates how different degrees of market power affect bank efficiency and stability in the context of developing economies. It sheds light on the competition-stability nexus by documenting and analyzing the complex interactions between a tripod of variables that are central for regulators: the degree of market power, bank cost and profit efficiency, and overall firm stability. The results show that an increase in the degree of market power leads to greater bank stability and enhanced profit efficiency, despite significant cost efficiency losses. The findings lend empirical justification to the traditional view that increased competition may undermine bank stability, and may bear significant implications for stressed banking systems in developing economies.

Microfinance: its Impact, Outreach and Sustainability

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between banking sector reform and bank performance - measured in terms of efficiency, total factor productivity growth and net interest margin - accounting for the effects through competition and bank risk-taking. To this end, we develop an empirical model of bank performance, which is consistently estimated using recent econometric techniques. The model is applied to bank panel data from ten newly acceded EU countries. The results indicate that both banking sector reform and competition exert a positive impact on bank efficiency, while the effect of reform on total factor productivity growth is significant only toward the end of the reform process. Finally, the effect of capital and credit risk on bank performance is in most cases negative, while it seems that higher liquid assets reduce the efficiency and productivity of banks. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Exploring the nexus between banking sector reform and performance: evidence from newly acceded EU countries

This paper contributes to the literature on foreign ownership and bank efficiency by examining whether the efficiency of foreign banks depends on the institutional quality of the host country and on institutional differences between the home and host country. Using stochastic frontier analysis for a sample of 2095 commercial banks in 105 countries for the years 1998-2003, we find that foreign ownership negatively affects bank efficiency. However, in countries with good governance this negative effect is less pronounced. We also find that higher quality of the institutions in the home country and higher similarity between home and host country institutional quality reduce foreign bank inefficiency. This article examines the relationship between competition and the performance of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs). We measure competition by constructing a Lerner index. Next, we assess the association between increased competition among MFIs on the one hand and outreach and loan repayment performance of individual MFIs on the other. The empirical investigation is based on data from 362 MFIs in 73 countries for the period 1995–2008. Based on our analysis we do find a general trend of increased competition in microfinance during the last decade. Moreover, our econometric analysis provides evidence that competition among MFIs is negatively associated with their outreach and repayment performance.

This paper examines the effect of competition among microfinance institutions (MFIs) on their performance. Specifically, by constructing a Lerner index, we assess the effect of increased competition on outreach, loan repayment, efficiency and financial performance. The empirical investigation is based on data from 362 MFIs in 73 countries for the period 1995-2009. Our constructed measure of competition reflects the general trend of competition in the microfinance market. The results show intense competition is, overall, negatively associated with performance of MFIs. However, ways that ensure lending standards, enhance information sharing and promote efficiency may help overcome the adverse effect of competition without risking growth of the microfinance sector.
