Physicists, chemists, and electrical engineers are all interested in the properties of dielectric materials, though with different purposes in mind. This book is intended to give a systematic account of the theory of dielectric properties, and thus to provide a background against which applications can be made. It seldom requires the reader to have a knowledge of mathematics greater than is implied by an acquaintance with calculus, and the reader is assumed to have a certain elementary knowledge of atomic and molecular physics, statistical mechanics, and electrostatics.

In this paper, the dynamic magnetic properties of an ensemble of interacting immobilized magnetic nanoparticles with aligned easy axes in an applied ac magnetic field directed perpendicular to the easy axes are considered. The system models soft, magnetically sensitive composites synthesized from liquid dispersions of the magnetic nanoparticles in a strong static magnetic field, followed by the carrier liquid's polymerization. After polymerization, the nanoparticles lose translational degrees of freedom; they react to an ac magnetic field via Néel rotation, when the particle's magnetic moment deviates from the easy axis inside the particle body. Based on a numerical solution of the Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density of the magnetic moment orientation, the dynamic magnetization, frequency-dependent susceptibility, and relaxation times of the particle's magnetic moments are determined. It is shown that the system's magnetic response is formed under the influence of competing interactions, such as dipole-dipole, field-dipole, and dipole-easy-axis interactions. The contribution of each interaction to the magnetic nanoparticle's dynamic response is analyzed. The obtained results provide a theoretical basis for predicting the properties of soft, magnetically sensitive composites, which are increasingly used in high-tech industrial and biomedical technologies.

Influence of field amplitude and dipolar interactions on the dynamic response of immobilized magnetic nanoparticles: Perpendicular mutual alignment of an alternating magnetic field and the easy axes.

The number of cancer patients is rapidly increasing worldwide. Among the leading causes of human death, cancer can be regarded as one of the major threats to humans. Although many new cancer treatment procedures such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgical methods are nowadays being developed and used for testing purposes, results show limited efficiency and high toxicity, even if they have the potential to damage cancer cells in the process. In contrast, magnetic hyperthermia is a field that originated from the use of magnetic nanomaterials, which, due to their magnetic properties and other characteristics, are used in many clinical trials as one of the solutions for cancer treatment. Magnetic nanomaterials can increase the temperature of nanoparticles located in tumor tissue by applying an alternating magnetic field. A very simple, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly method is the fabrication of various types of functional nanostructures by adding magnetic additives to the spinning solution in the electrospinning process, which can overcome the limitations of this challenging treatment process. Here, we review recently developed electrospun magnetic nanofiber mats and magnetic nanomaterials that support magnetic hyperthermia therapy, targeted drug delivery, diagnostic and therapeutic tools, and techniques for cancer treatment.

Electrospun Magnetic Nanofiber Mats for Magnetic Hyperthermia in Cancer Treatment Applications—Technology, Mechanism, and Materials

The response of ferrofluids to a high-amplitude AC magnetic field is important for several applications including magnetic hyperthermia and biodetection. In computer simulations of the dynamic susceptibility of a ferrofluid outside the linear response region, there are several problems associated with the fact that an increase in the frequency of the AC field leads to the appearance of additional computational errors, which can even lead to unphysical results. In this article, we study the dependence of the computational error arising in the computer simulation of the dynamic susceptibility on the input parameters of the numerical algorithm: the length of the time step, the total number of computer simulation periods, and averaging period. Computer simulation is carried out using the Langevin dynamics method and takes Brownian rotational relaxation of magnetic particles and interparticle interactions into account. The reference theory [Yoshida T.; Enpuku K. Jap. J. Ap. Phys. 2009] is used to estimate computational error. As a result, we give practical recommendations for choosing the optimal input parameters of the numerical algorithm, which make it possible to obtain reliable results of the dynamic susceptibility of a ferrofluid in a high-amplitude AC field in a wide frequency range.
