Complex elliptically symmetric (CES) distributions have been widely used in various engineering applications for which non-Gaussian models are needed. In this overview, circular CES distributions are surveyed, some new results are derived and their applications e.g., in radar and array signal processing are discussed and illustrated with theoretical examples, simulations and analysis of real radar data. The maximum likelihood (ML) estimator of the scatter matrix parameter is derived and general conditions for its existence and uniqueness, and for convergence of the iterative fixed point algorithm are established. Specific ML-estimators for several CES distributions that are widely used in the signal processing literature are discussed in depth, including the complex t -distribution, K-distribution, the generalized Gaussian distribution and the closely related angular central Gaussian distribution. A generalization of ML-estimators, the M-estimators of the scatter matrix, are also discussed and asymptotic analysis is provided. Applications of CES distributions and the adaptive signal processors based on ML- and M-estimators of the scatter matrix are illustrated in radar detection problems and in array signal processing applications for Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) estimation and beamforming. Furthermore, experimental validation of the usefulness of CES distributions for modelling real radar data is given.

Complex Elliptically Symmetric Distributions: Survey, New Results and Applications

This paper deals with the problem of detecting a radar target signal against correlated non-Gaussian clutter, which is modeled by the compound-Gaussian distribution. We prove that if the texture of compound-Gaussian clutter is modeled by an inverse-gamma distribution, the optimum detector is the optimum Gaussian matched filter detector compared to a data-dependent threshold that varies linearly with a quadratic statistic of the data. We call this optimum detector a linear-threshold detector (LTD). Then, we show that the compound-Gaussian model presented here varies parametrically from the Gaussian clutter model to a clutter model whose tails are evidently heavier than any K-distribution model. Moreover, we show that the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT), which is a popular suboptimum detector because of its constant false-alarm rate (CFAR) property, is an optimum detector for our clutter model in the limit as the tails get extremely heavy. The GLRT-LTD is tested against simulated high-resolution sea clutter data to investigate the dependence of its performance on the various clutter parameters.

Coherent Radar Target Detection in Heavy-Tailed Compound-Gaussian Clutter

In this paper, an efficient statistical model, called generalized Gamma distribution (GΓD), for the empirical modeling of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is proposed. The GΓD forms a large variety of alternative distributions (especially including Rayleigh, exponential, Nakagami, Gamma, Weibull, and log-normal distributions commonly used for the probability density function (pdf) of SAR images as special cases), and is flexible to model the SAR images with different land-cover typologies. Moreover, based on second-kind cumulants, a closed-form estimator for GΓD parameters is derived by exploiting the second-order approximation for Polygamma function. Without involving the numerical iterative process for solutions, this estimator is computationally efficient and, hence, can make the GΓD convenient for applications in the online SAR image processing. Finally, experimental results from tests carried out with actual SAR images demonstrate that the GΓD can achieve better goodness of fit than the state-of-the-art pdfs.

On the Empirical-Statistical Modeling of SAR Images With Generalized Gamma Distribution

We propose an information theoretic waveform design algorithm for target tracking in a low-grazing angle (LGA) scenario. We incorporate realistic physical and statistical effects, such as Earth's curvature, vertical refractivity gradient of lower atmosphere, and compound-Gaussian characteristics of sea-clutter, into our model. We employ a co-located multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar configuration using wideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signalling scheme. The frequency diversity of OFDM provides richer information about the target as different scattering centers resonate at different frequencies. Additionally, we use polarization-sensitive transceivers to resolve the multipath signals with small separation angles. Thus, we track the scattering coefficients of the target at different frequencies along with its position and velocity. We apply a sequential Monte Carlo method (particle filter) to track the target. Our tracker works in a closed-loop fashion with an integrated optimal waveform design technique based on mutual information (MI) criterion. We seek the optimal OFDM waveform at the current pulse duration to maximize the MI between the state and measurement vectors at the next pulse duration utilizing all the measurement history up to the current pulse. Our numerical examples demonstrate the importance of realistic physical modeling, effects of frequency diversity through OFDM MIMO configuration, and achieved performance improvements due to adaptive OFDM waveform design.

OFDM MIMO Radar With Mutual-Information Waveform Design for Low-Grazing Angle Tracking

A radar pulse that impinges upon a radar resolution area of the sea surface produces backscattered returns which are called sea clutter. For low grazing angles and very fine radar cell resolution areas, the clutter intensity distribution departs significantly from the exponential distribution. In this case, the clutter is said to display spiky behavior and the distribution of the intensity develops a much longer tail relative to the exponential distribution. Statistical analysis of collected data near a grazing angle of 0.2° at X-band from the sea off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii are examined relative to the log-normal, Weibull and K distributions. Based on an analogy of sea clutter and other disciplines including computer networks and finance, we also apply the Pareto distribution to the collected data. We also compare the data to the WW and KK two-population mixture distributions. Maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters of the distributions are obtained from the measured data. In all cases, the two population mixture distributions and the Pareto distribution are more accurate than the three classical distributions. However the Pareto distribution has the advantage of being an analytically tractable two parameter distribution while having similar accuracy to the five parameter WW and KK at critical values.

The Pareto distribution for low grazing angle and high resolution X-band sea clutter

The inverse gamma distributed texture is important for modeling compound-Gaussian clutter (e.g. for sea reflections), due to the simplicity of estimating its parameters. We develop maximum-likelihood (ML) and method of fractional moments (MoFM) estimates to find the parameters of this distribution. We compute the Cramer-Rao bounds (CRBs) on the estimate variances and present numerical examples. We also show examples demonstrating the applicability of our methods to real lake-clutter data. Our results illustrate that, as expected, the ML estimates are asymptotically efficient, and also that the real lake-clutter data can be very well modeled by the inverse gamma distributed texture compound-Gaussian model.
