A range of recent anglophone novels is committed to weaving connections between English and other languages, thus turning English into a language of encounter. Activating both multilingual and translingual configurations, these novels are what one might—in line with Yasemin Yildiz (2012)—call “post-monolingual.” Post-monolingual novels are powerful expressions of the plurality of languages that coexist within seemingly homogeneous spaces. Fluidizing the boundaries between languages, these novels pose intricate challenges for literary studies, which concern all major dimensions of the literary text, that is, its poetics, its modes of reading, and the logic of publishing. The article explores the complexities at the heart of post-monolingual novels, offering close readings of Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor’s The Dragonfly Sea (2019) and Karina Lickorish Quinn’s The Dust Never Settles (2021).

Confronting Potential Cultural Barriers in Translated Works reflects upon the stylistic choices of Maxine Hong Kingston and Sandra Cisneros in their respective works, "No Name Woman" and “Woman Hollering Creek.” Both strategically include either moments of or full iterations of translation culturally and linguistically. When incorporating translation at any degree, a potential barrier could arise: a barrier from comprehension, a barrier from translation, a barrier between author and reader, or a barrier between cultures. Throughout this essay, I will be discerning the stylistic choices of Cisneros and Kingston concerning their inclusion of translation but also their overarching storylines to evaluate whether their work disrupts the presented cultural barrier or whether the presented cultural barrier disrupts their work.

While literary scholars have frequently and fruitfully explored the politics of linguistic identity as they play out in the lives of Latina/o authors, their books, and their characters, the paratextual glossary has often been overlooked as simply a tool meant to accommodate monolingual, English-speaking audiences. But in a number of contemporary Latina/o narratives, including most particularly Ernesto Galarza’s 1971 autobiographical novel Barrio Boy , those glossaries both offer and undermine the illusion of linguistic stability, materially engaging readers in the process of transculturation. Rather than easing translation for monolingual readers, these glossaries force readers to reflect on the process and politics of translation itself.
