TL;DR: The social participation proved to have a significant association to edentulism, thereby attesting to the negative effect of this condition on social aspects.
Abstract: This study aimed was to test the association between quality of life and edentulism among elderly individuals in a city in southeastern Brazil. This cross-sectional study was carried out with 163 individuals aged 60 years or older, functionally independent and non-institutionalized. Data were collected with a questionnaire and oral examination. The edentulism was the dependent variable. The independent variables were sex, age, household income and quality of life (WHOQOL-Old) and their scores. To assess the association between the dependent variable and independent variables was used bivariate analysis (p < 0.10). Poisson regression model was performed, adjusting for age and sex. The average age of participants was 69 years (± 6.1), 68.7% were female and 52.8% were diagnosed as completely edentulous (90% CI: 0.33–1.24). When the independent variables were associated to the prevalence of edentulism, statistically significant associations were found for age (p = 0.03) and social participation dimension of the WHOQOL-Old (p = 0.08). In the Poisson regression, social participation remained statistically associated to edentulism {RP = 2.12 [90% CI (1.10–4.00)]}. The social participation proved to have a significant association to edentulism, thereby attesting to the negative effect of this condition on social aspects.

TL;DR: Dentists who worked in the public sector demonstrated a greater knowledge regarding the elderly and this knowledge did not influence attitudes towards ageing, and women demonstrated more positive attitude regarding ageing and dental care.
Abstract: doi: 10.1111/j.1741-2358.2011.00534.x Knowledge and attitudes of dentists regarding ageing and the elderly Objective: This study was aimed to identify the knowledge and attitudes of dentists regarding ageing and the elderly. Background: As the population ages, there is a greater demand for differentiated care from health professionals. However, the treatment needs of the elderly population are not sufficiently addressed, particularly in developing countries. Materials and methods: An official list of all dentists registered in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, was obtained from the Regional Dentistry Council. A questionnaire was delivered to 276 randomly selected dentists; the survey contained questions designed to characterise the sample and identify dentists’ conduct towards elderly patients. A Likert scale was used to identify knowledge regarding care for the elderly and attitudes towards ageing. Results: Women demonstrated more positive attitudes towards the elderly. Graduates who worked in the public sector demonstrated a greater knowledge of geriatric dentistry (p < 0.05). Attending specific continuing education courses had no influence over the dentists’ willingness to treat the elderly population. Significant associations were not found between attitudes and knowledge regarding the elderly. Conclusion: Dentists who worked in the public sector demonstrated a greater knowledge regarding the elderly. This knowledge did not influence attitudes towards ageing. Women demonstrated a more positive attitude regarding ageing and dental care.

TL;DR: Under the conditions of this study, it was concluded that the BBO pattern was more suitable than CGO for the lower complete denture supported by implants without free distal ends.
Abstract: OBJECTIVE: The occlusal patterns are key requirements for the clinical success of oral rehabilitation supported by implants. This study compared the stresses generated by the disocclusion in the canine guide occlusion (CGO) and bilateral balanced occlusion (BBO) on the implants and metallic infrastructure of a complete Branemark protocol-type denture modified with the inclusion of one posterior short implant on each side. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A three-dimensional model simulated a mandible with seven titanium implants as pillars, five of them installed between the mental foramen and the two posterior implants, located at the midpoint of the occlusal surface of the first molar. A load of 15 N with an angle of 45° was applied to a tooth or distributed across three teeth to simulate the CGO or BBO, respectively. The commercial program ABAQUS® was used for the model development, before and after the processing of the data. The results were based on a linear static analysis and were used to compare the magnitude of the equivalent stress for each of the simulations. RESULTS: The results showed that the disocclusion in CGO generated higher stresses concentrated on the working side in the region of the short implant. In BBO, the stresses were less intense and more evenly distributed on the prosthesis. The maximum stress found in the simulation of the disocclusion in CGO was two times higher than that found in the simulation of the BBO. The point of maximum stress was located in the neck of the short implant on the working side. CONCLUSIONS: Under the conditions of this study, it was concluded that the BBO pattern was more suitable than CGO for the lower complete denture supported by implants without free distal ends.

TL;DR: The authors found that TISPs with a short span and wider-diameter implants resulted in more homogenous stress distribution and less stress concentration on the implants, while those with a long span yielded higher stress concentrations on the implant and between the pontics.
Abstract: PURPOSE The goal of this study was to compare the stress distribution of tooth-implant-supported prostheses (TISPs) and solely implant-supported prostheses (ISPs) with two different pontic spans (three units versus four units). MATERIALS AND METHODS Two-dimensional finite element models were constructed from the radiographs of polyester resin casts to mimic TISPs and ISPs. In all, eight models were analyzed. Occlusal loads of 15 N and 30 N were applied to the premolars and molars, respectively. The lateral and inferior borders of the models were constrained, with all degrees of freedom equal to zero. Eight-node elements with plane strain assumption were used for simulation. RESULTS The authors found that TISPs with a short span and wider-diameter implants resulted in more homogenous stress distribution and less stress concentration on the implants. The long span yielded higher stress concentrations on the implants and between the pontics. CONCLUSIONS In all models analyzed, stress concentrations were present in the implants.

TL;DR: In this paper, a longitudinal prospectivo for examinado 28 pacientes antes, durante e apos completar seis meses do termino do tratamento oncologico.
