Being sessile organisms, plants cannot escape unwanted changes in the environment. The rapid human population explosion caused significant environmental problems. Heavy metals produced through various sources can cause severe damage to living organisms. The study was planned to evaluate four grass species’ morpho-physiological growth characteristics and phytoremediation capabilities under chromium (Cr) and lead stress (Pb) in the arid climate. Typha angustifolia, Tragus roxburghii, Aeluropus logopoides, and Cenchrus ciliaris grass species were used for the study. One-year-old stubbles from the Cholistan desert were used for the experiment. Cr treatments in the form of K2Cr2O7 were applied at 0, 20, 40, and 80 mg L–1, whereas Pb was applied as PbCl2 at 0, 50, 200, and 500 mg L–1 as control, low, moderate and high-stress, respectively. After 6 weeks of heavy metals treatments, plants were harvested and analyzed for growth performance and phytoremediation capabilities. Results depicted that, regarding morphological attributes, T. angustifolia performed better, followed by C. ciliaris; no clear pattern was observed for T. roxburghii and A. logopoides. The CO2 assimilation rate (Co2d) and water use efficiency (WUE) increased as the heavy metal stress increased in all species under both metals. In contrast, total chlorophyll content was higher under low stress. Other physiological parameters, such as relative humidity (RHd), net photosynthetic rate (A), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (Gs), leaf internal CO2 concentration (Ci) and membrane stability index (MSI) gradually decreased as the Cr, and Pb stress levels increased among all the species. Moreover, Cr and Pb absorption contents of T. angustifolia were higher than the other three species at each stress level. Overall, T. angustifolia thrived against heavy metals stress and showed higher biomass, maximum photosynthetic measurements, WUE and higher metal absorption among all the selected species. Results concluded that although all the selected species behaved fine under stress conditions, T. angustifolia performance was better; thus, it can be used to remediate the soil near industrial estates.

Morpho-physiological growth performance and phytoremediation capabilities of selected xerophyte grass species toward Cr and Pb stress

The aim of this study was to prove that the Fe-containing by-products (compost, sewage and lime sludge) have potential influence on the correction of Fe deficiency in sunflower and maize. The physiological parameters used were the dry matter (DM), the relative chlorophyll content, and the content of photosynthesis pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoids). The results showed that sewage sludge was effective even when applied at low concentration (2 g L−1) for both sunflower and maize plants. In maize, however, chlorophyll a was the only pigment induced after sewage sludge treatments in contrast to sunflower, which could be the reason for lower DM in maize. Compost could only be effective when applied at higher concentrations (4 g L−1) for sunflower because of its low-Fe content, further showing that maize plants require more Fe. Despite its high-Fe content, lime sludge could not be effective in alleviating Fe deficiency for both sunflower and maize plants because of its high pH, which makes Fe unavailable for uptake by the plants. Although the investigated by-products can be hazardous depending on their origin, their use as micro-element fertilizer can be a very economical way of utilization in the agricultural fields, which may limit the use of high quantities of expensive Fe-containing fertilizers. Among the three waste products, sewage sludge application proved to have a great potential of correcting Fe deficiency by inducing accumulation of the photosynthesis pigments, leading to high photosynthesis and eventually high DM.

The use of industrial waste materials for alleviation of iron deficiency in sunflower and maize

Biomass from perennial plants can be considered a carbon-neutral renewable resource. The tall wheatgrass hybrid Szarvasi-1 (Agropyron elongatum, hereafter referred to as “Szarvasi”) belongs to the perennial Poaceae representing a species, which can grow on marginal soils and produce large amounts of biomass. Several conventional and advanced pretreatment methods have been developed to enhance the saccharification efficiency of plant biomass. Advanced pretreatment methods, such as microwave-assisted pretreatment methods are faster and use less energy compared to conventional pretreatment methods. In this study, we investigated the potential of Szarvasi biomass as a biorefinery feedstock. For this purpose, the lignocellulosic structure of Szarvasi biomass was investigated in detail. In addition, microwave-assisted pretreatments were applied to Szarvasi biomass using different reagents including weak acids and alkali. The produced pulp, hydrolysates, and extracted lignin were quantitatively characterized. In particular, the alkali pretreatment significantly enhanced the saccharification efficiency of the pulp 16-fold compared to untreated biomass of Szarvasi. The acid pretreatment directly converted 25% of the cellulose into glucose without the need of enzymatic digestion. In addition, based on lignin compositional and lignin linkage analysis a lignin chemical model structure present in Szarvasi biomass could be established.

Microwave Assisted Pretreatment of Szarvasi (Agropyron elongatum) Biomass to Enhance Enzymatic Saccharification and Direct Glucose Production

The use of fast-growing tree species, such as Casuarina glauca for wastewater treatment could improve the quality of wastewater and offer an ecological and sustainable system. A hydroponically experiment was conducted to evaluate C. glauca ability to remove heavy metals from secondary treated urban wastewater (SWW). The effect of the SWW on plant biomass, some physiological parameters, heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Ni and Zn) bioaccumulation and removal from wastewater was evaluated. After 28 days, wastewater treatment C. glauca showed high efficiency for the removal of pathogenic bacteria such as faecal coliforms and faecal streptococci from SWW. A significant reduction was found for electrical conductivity, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand and suspended solids with 31%, 92%, 83% and 31% respectively. Casuarina glauca plants were able to remove heavy metal ions Cd, Pb, Ni and Zn from SWW and the removal efficiency was 92%, 77%, 83% and 73%, respectively. Casuarina glauca plants accumulated concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Ni and Zn) in their roots higher than the shoots. SWW had a remarkable effect on plant growth and photosynthetic capacity in C. glauca compared with plants grown in tap water (control). The results indicated that C. glauca can act as scavengers of heavy metal ions from polluted water and confirms their ability for wastewater treatment.

Assessment of Casuarina glauca as biofiltration model of secondary treated urban wastewater: effect on growth performances and heavy metals tolerance.

S-methylmethionine (SMM) is a universal metabolite of higher plants derived from L-methionine that has an approved priming effect under different types of abiotic and biotic stresses. Szarvasi-1 energy grass (Elymus elongatus subsp. ponticus cv. Szarvasi-1) is a biomass plant increasingly applied in phytoremediation to stabilize or extract heavy metals. In this study, Szarvasi-1 was grown in a nutrient solution. As a priming agent, SMM was applied in 0.02, 0.05 and 0.1 mM concentrations prior to 0.01 mM Cd addition. The growth and physiological parameters, as well as the accumulation pattern of Cd and essential mineral nutrients, were investigated. Cd exposure decreased the root and shoot growth, chlorophyll concentration, stomatal conductance, photosystem II function and increased the carotenoid content. Except for stomatal conductance, SMM priming had a positive effect on these parameters compared to Cd treatment without priming. In addition, it decreased the translocation and accumulation of Cd. Cd treatment decreased K, Mg, Mn, Zn and P in the roots, and K, S, Cu and Zn in the shoots compared to the untreated control. SMM priming changed the pattern of nutrient uptake, of which Fe showed characteristic accumulation in the roots in response to increasing SMM concentrations. We have concluded that SMM priming exerts a positive effect on Cd-stressed Szarvasi-1 plants, which retained their physiological performance and growth. This ameliorative effect is suggested to be based on, at least partly, the lower root-to-shoot Cd translocation by the upregulated Fe uptake and transport.
