Corrosion under insulation (CUI) is an important issue in marine environments. Pitting corrosion is a significant contributor to this issue. The ability to understand and model pitting behavior is integral to designing and maintaining assets in marine environments to decreased costs and increase safety and productivity. This paper reviews and analyses six categories of pitting knowledge to assess the current depth and breadth of understanding and to identify knowledge gaps in each category. The categories investigated are: identification of pitting, experimental methods, mechanism of pitting, modeling of pitting corrosion rates, remaining life assessment modeling, and risk-based inspections. This analysis finds that the depth of knowledge on pitting corrosion rate modeling and pitting mechanism is limited and requires further detailed study. The outcome of such study will strengthen pitting corrosion rate modeling, the accuracy of fitness-for-service assessments and risk-based inspection strategies.

Key Factors Involved in Pipeline Monitoring Techniques Using Robots and WSNs: Comprehensive Survey

Wireless sensor networks are often utilized in different kinds of applications like healthcare, military operations, border security, road and pipeline monitoring etc. The majority of these applications use fixed network topology and place sensors in a linear form defined as a linear sensor network (LSN). The Linear sensor networks have gained much attraction of the researchers due to their several positive aspects including easy deployment for linear structures and robustness in different environments. The details about the LSN models and routing techniques are mostly overlooked in the previous studies. This study, therefore, explores the concept of LSNs models and routing techniques in various types of applications. Besides, it highlights the LSN design, classification, challenges and issues as well. The core motivation for this study is to summarize the types of LSNs and analyze their routing parameters i.e. energy efficiency, reliability, route discovery, route maintenance, coverage, delay, heterogeneity and mobility of sensors. Moreover, recent LSN techniques are classified according to the similarities of routing procedures. Further, this study has investigated and discussed various proposed solutions, future directions and opportunities that would serve as a milestone for other researchers so that they could explore further the LSN routing techniques more deeply.

An overview of routing techniques for road and pipeline monitoring in linear sensor networks

In recent years, the range of sensing technologies has prolonged rapidly, whereas the sensing devices are getting cheaper day by day. This has led to a fast expansion in condition monitoring of different systems, structures, vehicles, and machinery using these sensing devices. There are special kind of structures, which are linear in nature and these structures includes roads, bridges, pipelines (Air Conditioner/ Oil/ Gas/Water etc.) can be over ground or underground and Electric power distribution lines. The present invention relates to a method for simplifying defect analysis on an underwater cylindrical body. The method comprises receiving a plurality of images corresponding to an underwater region. Moreover, for each received image and for a predetermined direction in the received images, the method further comprises determining whether a cylindrical body have a representation in the received image and, upon positive determination, determining at least two contour lines associated with contours of the representation of the cylindrical body, determining a transformation of the latter received image to parallelize the latter determined contour lines and the predetermined direction and transforming the latter image according to the latter determined transformation. In addition, the method comprises combining said transformed images to create a panorama image, and identifying possible defects on the panorama image.
