Fullerene polymers: synthesis and properties.

In this review, we examined the interactions of metal complexes and metal surfaces with fullerenes. That information has been related to the formation of redox-active materials produced by electrochemical reduction of solutions of various transition metal complexes and fullerene or fullerene adducts. These redox-active polymers are strongly bound to electrode surfaces and display electrochemical activity in solutions containing only supporting electrolyte. Extensive studies of the electrochemical behavior of these films have been used to characterize their properties and structure. The process that produces these poly-PdnC60 and poly-PtnC60 films can also produce composite materials that consist of metal nanoparticles interspersed with the poly-PdnC60 and poly-PtnC60 materials. Cyclic voltammetric studies of the electrochemical formation and redox properties of C60/Pd films are reported. Films used in this work are generated under multicyclic scans in an acetonitrile/toluene (1:4, v/v) mixture containing fullerene C60 and palladium(II) acetate trimer as the film precursors and tetra(n-butyl)ammonium perchlorate as supporting electrolyte. The structure and electrochemical properties of the deposited layers depend on the relative concentrations of the precursors (C60 and {Pd(OAc)2}3) present in the growth solution. In the presence of excess palladium(II) acetate trimer, palladium, as well as the redox active film, is deposited, as shown by electrochemical studies of the behavior of the modified electrodes toward hydrogen evolution and palladium oxidation in aqueous acidic solution. Electrochemical Studies of C60/Pd Films Formed by the Reduction of C60 in the Presence of Palladium(II) Acetate Trimer. Effects of Varying C60/Pd(II) Ratios in the Precursor Solutions

The electrochemical properties of solid films deposited on an electrode surface by simultaneous electrochemical reduction of C60 and palladium(II) acetate trimer in an acetonitrile/toluene mixture have been studied using cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical switching between the doped (conducting) and undoped (nonconducting) states involves both electron and ion transport within the film. The overall control of charge percolation through the C60/Pd electroactive material is governed by the transport of cations. The ion transport depends both on the nature of solvent and supporting electrolyte. The size of solvent molecule is the major factor determining the degree of solvent swelling of the layer. In the case of small solvent molecules, the C60/Pd film exhibits a reversible redox behavior. For larger molecule solvents, the voltammograms show a departure from reversibility.
