Adrenal steroid biosynthesis by different species of mouselike rodents

1. The level of plasma free adrenocorticosteroids in three strains of normal mice were estimated. The steroid 11-deoxycortisol (Reichstein compound S) was found in relatively large quantities besides the secretion of corticosterone. 2. The two steroids isolated by paper chromatography were identified by a number of other methods to establish and confirm their nature. 4. The three strains of mice, all have both steroids: corticosterone and 11-deoxycortisol. The results show neither sex nor strain differences as regard to the quantity of corticosterone per 100 ml plasma. 4. Corresponding differences in the ratio of 11-deoxycortisol to corticosterone (S/B ratio) were found between the strains. 5. The importance of this 11-deoxycortisol and its possible physiological role has been discussed.
