TL;DR: In this paper, a multi-resource generalized assignment problem for assigning snow removal sectors to snow disposal sites is formulated and a two-phase heuristic solution procedure is developed, and solutions and sensitivity analyses are presented using data for the City of Montreal.
Abstract: Snow removal and disposal are expensive winter activities that affect the quality of life and the environment in cities throughout the world. To facilitate traffic flow in urban regions that receive heavy snowfall, snow is first ploughed from streets and sidewalks and then hauled to disposal sites. A city is typically divided into many sectors that are cleared of snow concurrently. This paper briefly describes urban snow removal and disposal operations and analyses the snow disposal assignment problem for assigning snow removal sectors to snow disposal sites. The snow disposal assignment problem is formulated as a multi-resource generalized assignment problem. A two-phase heuristic solution procedure is developed, and solutions and sensitivity analyses are presented using data for the City of Montreal.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe urban snow removal and disposal operations in detail, identify relevant management problems, review previous studies, and highlight opportunities for future research, and present a decision support system that addresses several major problems in an integrated fashion.
Abstract: Urban snow removal and disposal operations include a number of challenging strategic and tactical problems that are relatively unstudied. Those operations include spreading de-icers and abrasives, plowing snow, loading snow into trucks, and transporting snow to disposal sites. We describe urban snow removal and disposal operations in detail, identify relevant management problems, review previous studies, and highlight opportunities for future research. We also describe a snow removal and disposal decision support system, currently under development, that addresses several major problems in an integrated fashion.

TL;DR: This work focuses on the problem of minimizing travel time for the context where motion cycles are simple, non-interleaved, and where information is available at the beginning of the horizon, and proposes and applies an exact method for medium size problems.
Abstract: AbstractThe shared storage assignment policy, contrary to the dedicated one, allows a rack slot to receive units from different products or classes of products. This type of storage can lead to substantial savings in space and travel time. We focus on the problem of minimizing travel time for the context where motion cycles are simple, non-interleaved, and where information is available at the beginning of the horizon. We propose and apply an exact method for medium size problems. Then, we propose and analyse a very efficient heuristic method for large scale problems.
