TL;DR: A review of current theoretical and experimental research in the field of nonlinear optical frequency mixing in gaseous media can be found in this paper, where fundamental physical principles and features of non-linear optics of gases and vapors of chemical compounds are examined.
Abstract: A review of current theoretical and experimental research in the field of nonlinear optical frequency mixing in gaseous media: The authors examine fundamental physical principles and features of nonlinear optics of gases and vapors of chemical compounds. The experimental methods employed are described. Major advances in the fields of optical frequency conversion to infrared, vacuum-ultraviolet, and soft x-ray spectral ranges; improvement in the detection of weak IR signals by conversion to the visible and near ultraviolet ranges; and wavefront conjugation are described. Practical applications of discussed methods are emphasized.

TL;DR: In this paper, the distortion correction of a CO2-laser radiation wavefront was studied by using forward resonant parametric scattering in gaseous SF6 and retrace after retroreflection from a mirror.

TL;DR: In this article, an experimental investigation was made of direct generation of the eighth harmonic of neodymium laser radiation in mercury vapor, and it was shown that the appearance of a radial electric field was due to free flight of photoelectrons from the region of constriction of the pump radiation.
Abstract: An experimental investigation was made of direct generation of the eighth harmonic of neodymium laser radiation in mercury vapor. Estimates indicated that generation of an even (eighth) harmonic in a centrosymmetric medium was due to the appearance of a radial electric field as a result of free flight of photoelectrons from the region of constriction of the pump radiation.

TL;DR: In this paper, an electric field produced by free electrons created by photoionization was shown to be reasonable for even-order harmonic generation in a centrosymmetric medium.
Abstract: Direct eighth-harmonic generation (λ = 134.4 nm) of Nd-laser radiation has been studied experimentally in Hg vapour. An electric field produced by free electrons created by photoionization is shown to be reasonable for even-order harmonic generation in a centrosymmetric medium.
