The present work investigates university-industry interactions in Brazil through available data from CNPq's Research Groups Directory collected in Census 2002. Although limitations intrinsic to information collection, the database supplies some evidence from recent university-industry interactions in Brazil. The results point that collaborative relations are concentrated in terms of knowledge field and sector of activity. The more frequent relationships were no routine engineering, consultancy and trainament. This result were in accordance with Brazilian's NSI, but also suggests that much more can be done fostering academic knowledge transference to firms in the country.

Summary. In the context of the globalisation of R&D activities, many urban and regional economies have attempted to create specific places in the hope of developing and embedding these activities. In this paper, it is argued that it is insufficient for such places to provide just physical infrastructure and investment benefits. Understanding actor-specific strategies and their enrolment in innovation networks and enabling institutional pre-conditions are equally important in embedding R&D activities. Based on a study of one such place—the Singapore Science Park— this paper explores the realities of science park formation. It is found that adequate institutional thickness and local embeddedness apply only to a small number of R&D firms in the Park. The paper also examines the myth that spatial proximity to R&D institutions and organisations automatically results in collaborative R&D efforts. The study shows that, for science parks to be more than a form of glorified property development, there is an urgent need for a fundamental transformation in the prevailing thinking of economic planning, R&D policies and urban development.

Purpose – The main purpose of his paper is to identify key barriers for technology transfer (TT) in a transitional economy. Poland is presented as a case study, with an emphasis on domestic TT.Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on the author's empirical studies, using a few research methods, like: a postal questionnaire, the Delphi method, online questionnaire and a statistical data analysis.Findings – In the period under analysis, no significant improvement occurred in the field of TT processes in Poland. The poor state of TT is due to the presence of numerous obstacles/barriers.
