One hundred and twenty-one allergic children with moderate to severe perennial asthma were randomly assigned to receive subcutaneous injections of either a mixture of up to seven aeroallergen extracts or a placebo. All went through an initial period ofobservation and stabilization during which time the children and parents were instructed in the management of asthma and environmental control and were seen every 2 to 3 weeks for medication adjustments. Eligible children were without furry pets and in equal numbers from an inner city population, largely black, and a suburban population, largely white. The children were between 5 and 12 years of age. Childhood Antecedents of Allergic Sensitization in Young British Adults

CONTEXTO AND OBJETIVO: Com o avanco cientifico e tecnologico ocorrido a partir dos anos 60, surgiu um crescente aumento do numero de pesquisas cientificas e uma inflacao de co-autorias. Ao longo do tempo, observou-se que numerosas publicacoes mostravam autores ou co-autores cuja participacao na pesquisa publicada havia sido minima ou ate mesmo inexistente. O objetivo deste trabalho e analisar, atraves da literatura, as situacoes de ma-conduta em autoria: tipos, principais causas, consequencias e normas eticas; e estabelecer propostas para que as publicacoes cientificas apresentem um maior comprometimento etico. TIPO DE ESTUDO E LOCAL: Revisao narrativa realizada na Faculdade de Medicina de Itajuba, Minas Gerais, Brasil. METODO: Analise de publicacoes sobre autoria, atraves das bases de dados Medline, Lilacs e SciELO. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSOES: Frequentes tipos de ma conduta sao autoria "presenteada", fragmentacao e duplicacao em publicacoes. As causas que mais induzem a essas situacoes parecem ser a pressao exercida pela academia e o desejo de ascensao social e profissional. Esse vies na ciencia, acrescido de outras formas de autoria antietica, continua ate hoje, apesar dos criterios definidos pelo Comite Internacional de Editores de Periodicos Medicos, o Grupo de Vancouver. RECOMENDACOES: Sao propostas varias acoes juntoas instituicoes de ensino, agencias de fomento a pesquisa, orgaos reguladores e associacoes de classe, para que se institua uma politica de avaliacao que priorize a qualidade das publicacoes, bem como o estabelecimento de preceitos eticos em pesquisa e producao cientifica.

Authorship: an ethical dilemma of science.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research was to assess the prevalence of addictive drug use among students of University of Camerino (Italy) and to verify aspects related to substance use in this population. METHODS: The survey was carried out in the form of anonymous questionnaires completed by 345 participants. Chi-square test was used for statistic evaluation. RESULTS: Most students have experienced legal addictive substances: 28.0 % of participants smoke cigarettes regularly and 23.2 % of respondents have admitted regular alcohol consumption. In addition, 50.4 % of subjects have already tried an illegal drug; the most used substance was cannabis (46.7 %), followed by cocaine (13.3 %). CONCLUSION: Our results confirmed the increased experimental use of cannabis among young people in Europe and showed a long-term use of drugs, particularly cocaine, among university students.

Alcohol, cigarette, and illegal substance consumption among medical students: a cross-sectional survey.

Durante a elaboracao de um trabalho cientifico, uma das dificuldades que por ventura podem ocorrer e a escolha dos participantes da pesquisa que devem compor a sua autoria. Situacao ainda mais desagradavel e a ordenacao dos autores, de acordo com o merito de cada um no trabalho. OBJETIVO: Apresentar, de maneira justificada, uma proposta para a autoria do trabalho cientifico, mediante com a contribuicao de cada membro da equipe de pesquisadores. METODO: Foi realizada uma avaliacao da maneira de se propor a autoria cientifica nos principais centros de pesquisa do Brasil e na literatura pertinente, para a aquisicao de subsidios com vista a presente proposta. RESULTADOS: Sao apresentados em ordem de entrada os principais autores do trabalho e aqueles que devem merecer apenas agradecimento. Propoe-se uma escala numerica, com vistas a participacao de cada membro da equipe, para facilitar a inclusao de cada um dos autores. CONCLUSOES: O merito da autoria cientifica deve ser restrito aos participantes que tiveram uma colaboracao intelectual ao trabalho realizado, aliada a uma contribuicao efetiva para a pesquisa ser realizada e concluida.

Objective The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of alcohol, tobacco and psychotropic drug consumption by students of the Medical School of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and to verify aspects related to those addictions. Methods This study was carried out with students of all years of the medical course invited to participate anonymously, by answering a self-applied questionnaire which was previously evaluated and adapted to Brazilian reality. It was based upon the World Health Organization's Guidelines for Student Substance Use Survey and included 25 questions about drug addiction. Student's t test and chi-square test were applied to assess differences between the mean and proportions of data. Results Alcohol and tobacco were the more frequently used by the students, 85.2% and 16.3% respectively. Among psychotropic drugs, marijuana was reported by 16.5% of students, LSD by 6.9%, sedatives by 12%, amphetamines by 7.5% and inhalant substances by 16.8%. Cocaine, crack, opiates, anticholinergics and anabolics consumption were rarely mentioned. Conclusion Alcohol was the drug most used and was related to other drug addictions. Drugs were most frequently used by single, male students, who live alone and do not support themselves.

Prevalence of alcohol, tobacco and psychotropic drug use among medical students at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais.

Although splenectomy is helpful in the management of selected patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), in most cases this procedure is accompanied by a greater morbidity and mortality, mainly due to sepsis. Thus, it may be proposed that a conservative procedure that reduces the spleen size may have an effect similar to that of total spleen ablation for the treatment of CLL. The present paper describes our experience with an 81-year-old patient submitted to subtotal splenectomy for treatment of CLL. Indications for surgery were uncontrolled leukemic activity and intense abdominal discomfort due to the huge spleen. The good results obtained with subtotal splenectomy in the present case indicate that this procedure may be a new alternative for the treatment of CLL when removal of the spleen is indicated.

Subtotal splenectomy for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Introducao: Em muitos procedimentos pelvicos e abdominais, a ooforectomia bilateral se impoe, porem suas complicacoes sistemicas, como insuficiencias hormonais, podem ser de dificil controle.  Objetivo: Visando a preservacao da funcao gonadal, em casos de ooforectomia, avaliaram-se aspectos funcionais e histologicos de tecido ovariano auto-implantado, em posicao heterotopica.  Material e Metodos: Foram selecionadas 36 ratas Wistar, com ciclos estrais, normais, divididas aleatoriamente em quatro grupos (n=9): G1 . controle- submetido a laparotomia, sem procedimento cirurgico adicional; G2- ooforectomia bilateral; G3- os ovarios retirados foram implantados integralmente no retroperitonio; G4- os ovarios retirados foram fatiados e tambem implantados no retroperitonio. Nos 3 o e 6 o  meses pos-operatorios, realizaram-se esfregacos vaginais e estudos histologicos dos implantes ovarianos. Resultados: Os animais do grupo G1 tiveram seus ciclos normalmente. As ratas dos grupos G2 permaneceram durante todo o periodo em diestro. No grupo G3, no sexto mes, duas ratas tiveram ciclos completos, compativeis com a fase estral; tres animais apresentaram ciclos irregulares e os restantes permaneceram em diestro. No grupo G4, no sexto mes pos-operatorio, tres ratas apresentaram ciclos incompletos, cinco ratas apresentaram ciclos estrais completos, e apenas uma permaneceu fixa em diestro. O estudo anatomopatologico confirmou viabilidade ovariana em ambos os grupos de auto-implante (G3 e G4) com melhores resultados para o G4.  Conclusoes: O auto-implante ovariano no retroperitonio, na forma fatiada, apresentou melhor preservacao morfofuncional do que a do integro.
