Abstract: A review of the fluxing and mineralizing effects of CaF2 and CaSO4 during the clinkering process is presented. The simultaneous addition of CaSO4 and CaF2 to compositions in the system CaO—Al2O3—Fe2O2-SiO2 results in formation of phases not found in ordinary Portland cement: for example, C11A7·CaF2, C4A3S, and 3C2S·3CaSO4·CaF2, etc. These modify the compatible equilibrium phases as well as the stable primary fields of C3A and C3S. Finally, CaSO4 and CaF2 are responsible for changing the melt composition together with its rheological characteristics. Clinkerization of raw meals with silica moduli greater than 10 and lime saturation factor greater than 0·95 is possible when CaF2 and gypsum partially replace traditional fluxes. Finally, the results of an industrial test in which a mineralized white cement (AS-SR type) was produced are presented. Abstract: Ces travaux decrivent l'hydratation de deux types de ciment blanc, etudies par diffraction X, spectroscopie IR, ATD et calorimetrie a conduction. Les deux ciments different dans leur composition. L'un a ete confectionne a partir d'un melange cru dans lequel une partie du Al 2 O 3 a ete substituee par du fluorure de calcium et du gypse. L'autre avait une composition conventionnelle. La difference la plus importante a ete le retard de l'hydratation initiale pour le nouveau ciment, par rapport au ciment conventionnel. Dans le nouveau ciment se forme moins d'ettringite. Ceci est a attribuer a la moindre teneur en C 3 A et de gypse.

Abstract: Rendering mortars, which are still exposed to the open air on some of the walls of Medina Azahara, are studied and characterized in this work. Some repairing mortars used in different previous restorations are also characterized. Those rendering mortars are of different make considering the composition of their binder: lime, gypsum and mixed lime/ gypsum. Repairing mortars used in previous interventions are made of lime, excepting for a portland cement used by Felix Hernandez in the restoration of one of the rooms back in the 50's. Biological colonization is the main cause of decay in lime mortars, while in mortars made of gypsum, decay is a result of the solubilizating action of rain water.
