Government ownership of banks, institutions, and financial development

TL;DR: The authors examined the influence of institutions, such as deposit contract enforcement, in explaining the share of government owned banks in the banking system and argued that rather than privatizing or subsidizing state banks, governments in developing countries should build institutions that foster the development of private banking.
Journal ArticleDOI

Conservation and conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo: the impacts of warfare, mining, and protected areas on deforestation

Journal ArticleDOI

Government Ownership of Banks, Institutions and Economic Growth

TL;DR: The authors showed that during 1995-2007, government ownership of banks has been associated with higher long-run growth rates than not having government ownership at all levels of the financial system, and showed that previous results suggesting that government ownership is associated with lower long run growth rates are not robust to conditioning on more fundamental determinants of economic growth.
